Letters .Patent No. l1,621, dated December 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT CHALK-HOLDERS FOR BILLIARD-CUES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES JnNKIrsoN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use, a certain new and.useful Chalk-Holder for Billiard-Cues, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of' this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a. longitudinal section of said chalk-holder, and
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the same.
i Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. l
Billiard-players are in the habit of using chalk upon the ends of their cues, to prevent them` slipping on the ball and giving an incorrect movement to the same. The chalk is usually held in one hand, and applied t `the cue whileV held in the other hand. This soils the fingers, and is very inconvenient to players. The nature of my said invention eonsistsdn a chalk-holder that can be attached at any convenient part of the table or easily-accessible place, against the phalk-in which holder the end of the cue can be pressed, so as to chalk the same; and I provide a spring by which the holder is allowed to yield when pressed upon, and a. spirally grooved axis causes a partial rotation as the parts move, so as to rub the chalk on the cue.
In the drawing, a. represents a portion of the billiardtable or other support for the chalkholder b. z'is lthe chalk secured into the holder by a screw-ring, e, which 'ring guides the cue as well asretains the chalk. d is a rod forming an axis for the chalk-holder, and extending through the head e of the tubef. Said rod d has one or more spiral grooves in it, in order that a rotary movement may be given to the chalk-holder as it is pressed back, and gis a. spring to throw the chalk-holderv forwardgagain. h is an ornamental surrounding to the tnbef, of any desired character.
What I claim, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent, is-
1. A chalk-holdeiformed substantially as set forth, for chalking billiard-cues and similar articles, when pressed against the chalk in said holder, as specified.
2. The rod d and spiral, in combination with the chalk-holder, for the purposes set forth. 3. Forming the chalk-holder b with a screw-ring, c, to secure the chalk and guide the cue, as set forth.
In witnesswhereof, I have hereunto set uiy signature, this tvventy-fourth day of August, A. D. 1867.
