ERASER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,646, dated December 9, 1902.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of my improved erasers, the knife being shown as extended. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same, the closed, position of the knife-blade being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a cross-section looking in the direction indicated by the arrows from the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a similar view looking in the direction indicated by the arrows from the dotted line 4; 4 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a front end elevation.

In said drawings the portions marked 1 represent the handle of the tool, 2 the knifeblade, and 3 the rubber.

The handle 1 is preferably of metal and hollow. It may be formed from a blank of appropriate form stamped from a sheet of metal and bent to the shape desired. In its front end is left an aperture of a form suitable to permit the knife-blade 2 to slide back and forth therein. At its opposite end are formed two extensions 4, between which the rubber eraser is clamped, being held in place by inwardly-projecting brads 5, formed by suitable dies in the sides of said extensions near its upper edge, and is adapted to slide on said pin between said sides and afford the blade a firm support when extended. A wheel 8 with serrated edge is journaled on a shafts, near the lower side of the handle, near the end opposite to that through which the blade projects. An arm 9 is rigidly attached thereto and extends forward toward the blade, to which it is connected by a link 10, said link being hinged both to said arm and to said blade. Projecting from one side of said wheel and on one side of its axis is a pin 11, and a fiat spring 12, attached at one end to the handle, normally bears downward on said pin to hold said'wheel from accidentally turning.

In use when it is desired to use the blade it is thrown out into the position shown by turning the wheel Swith the thumb or finger to throw the arm 9 forward. As soon as the pin 11 has passed over the center the spring 12 will operate to turn said Wheel quickly until it reaches the position shown in whole lines in Fig. 2, throwing out the blade and holding it in position for use until the Wheel is turned back, which is done in the same manner, the spring operating to hold the blade against being accidentally extended, as will be readily understood. When the blade is in the extended position, the pivot between the arm 9 and the link 10 is slightly below a straight line, limited by a projecting finger or rest 1, so that said bladeis secured against closing in under the pressure of use. The upper front corner I) of the handle is preferably formed with a smooth hard surface that can be used as a burnisher on the paper after the eraser has been used.

The rubber 3 is of any character or form desired and found suitable, being clamped between the ends 4 of the sides of the handle and secured in place by the brads 5, projecting thereinto, as will be readily understood.

Modifications in the details of construction and arrangement may be made without departing from my invention, as will be readily understood.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combination-eraser comprising a hollow handle, a rubber secured in one end of said handle, a knife mounted to slide through an opening in the other end, and means for throwing said knife out and in and holding it positively in either position, substantially as set forth.

2. An eraser comprising a handle, a knifeblade mounted to slide through an opening in one end of said handle, said blade having a shank which fits in a way in said handle and affords support thereto, and a lever or swinging arm connected therewith for operating said blade out and in, substantially as set forth.

3. A11 eraser comprisinga handle, a knifeblade mounted to slidein a way in said handle, a pivoted part having an arm projecting therefrom, a link pivoted to said arm and to said blade, and means for operating said pivoted part, substantially as set forth.

4. An eraser comprising a handle, a blade mounted to slide out and in through an opening in said handle, the pivoted wheel and arm projecting therefrom, a link connected to the blade and to the arm, and a spring bearing against a part of said wheel to hold it against accidentally turning, substantially as set forth.

5. An eraser comprising the hollow handle, the sliding blade mounted therein, the wheel with an arm projecting therefrom, a projection on one side of said wheel at one side of its axis, a link pivotally connected to said arm and to said blade, and a spring bearing upon said projection, substantially as set forth.
