Unit STATES WILLIAM BENSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PlPE-BENDING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 715,000, dated December 2, 1902. Appfltation filed September 11, 1902. Serial No. 122,987 (N0 model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the oountyof Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Pipe-Bending Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for bending pipes, rods, and the like, and is specially intended to provide improved means for bending elbows for electric conduits.
The nature and characteristic features of the improvements will more fully appear by reference to the following description and the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a plan view in illustration of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a rear elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 represents a sectional elevation taken on the line A B of Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring to the drawings, the base a supports the form 1), comprising a series of curved grooves b b b b 5 having cross sections of different sizes and radii of different lengths, the several grooves being preferably parallel, approximately tangential to the base, and having different axes of curvature. Between the grooves are the ribs 0 0 c c, preferably having the struts d d d d connected therewith and resting on the base. At the ends of the form are the faces a and e, which are supported by the base. The form is preferable made separable from the base and provided with the lugs f, through which and the base are passed the bolt g, the form being thereby held through the faces to the base. The base or base-plate coacts with the grooves to form apertures for engaging the pipes to be bent to the curvature of such grooves, the pipes being readily engaged and firmly held while they are being bent from the base upon the form. The faces or webs e and 6, whether they be bolted to or made integral with the base-plate a, rigidly connect the grooved form thereto and permit the use of the skeleton form shown, while providing ample strength. The base providing both a fulcrum for the pipe and a support for the apparatus, it is readily placed and held on a floor, bench, or
block from which the pipe is bent.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. Inabending apparatus, aseries ofcurved grooves having radii of different lengths, said grooves being approximately tangential to a common base, substantially as specified.
2. In a bending apparatus, a form provided with a series of curved grooves having radii of different lengths and different axes of curvature, in combination with a base-plate upon which said form is supported, said grooves curving from said base-plate, substantially as specified.
3. In a bending apparatus, the combination of a base with a curved groove approximately tangential thereto, said base being adapted to support said groove and hold a pipe to be bent therefrom upon said groove, substantially as specified.
4. In abending apparatus, the combination of a base, with a form comprising a series of curved grooves having radii of different length, and apertures for engaging pipe ends, said base acting as a support for said form and pipe ends, substantially as specified.
5. In a bending apparatus, the combination of a base, with a form comprising a series of parallel curved grooves, said base being approximately tangential to the curves of said grooves and adapted to support said form, and mechanism for tying said form to said base, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of September, A. D. 1902.
WM. W. BENSON.
Witnesses:
