IMPROVEMENT IN ATTAGHING HORSE-SHOES.

TO ALL WHOM4 IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, HENRY SCHRELNER, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Nailless Horse-Shoe; and I dahereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which-A Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hooiI having my improved shoe applied thereto, and

The object of my improvement is to afford a more simple, inexpensive, and reliable mode ofattaching the belts to the sole of the shoe, and in arranging them in relation to each other and the hoof so as to allow a more free and easy spreading ofthe latter upon the sole.

My invention consists, substantially as hereinafter described, in securing the sole to the hoof by means of two like belts, each reaching respectively from near the heel on one side of the hoof, and extending diagonally around over the same to a point on the opposite side near the toe, the said'two belts orossingcach other near the middle of the front of the hoof; and my invention also consists in attaching the belts to the sole by means of tapering mortises made through the sole, and corresponding enlargements made on the lower ends of the belts, substantially as hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, A is the animals hoof, B the sole of the shoe, and C-D C-D the two belts. Each belt (C-D) consists of two metallic straps, the-one, C, having an eye or transverse slot, e', through which the thin end d of the other strap D is passed from the under side, and then drawn and bent over and down upon C, so as to securely bind the two parts CD together, as represented in tig. 1. In iig. 2, the manner of attaching the two pa-rts ot' each of the two belts O-D and C-D to the sole B is clearly shown, the mortises b being oblong openings made directly upward through the sole B, and wider at their bottoms than at their tops, and the lower ends d of the belts C-D enlarged or thickened, so as to make them ill or fit the said mortises, and, ot' course, prevent the former from being drawn upward out of-the latter in either fastening the shoe to the hoof, or in subsequent usage,

In applying this naillessshoe, small recesses, a', are required to be made in the lower edge of the hoof A, for the reception ofthe lower part ofthe belts above the sole, as shown in Iig. 1, for the purpose of allowingthe outer edge ofthe sole B to come nearly even with the outer edge ot' thehoot, :1nd for preventing the shoe from slipping forward or sideways on the hoot' in use.

The drawing represents a light or summer shoe, the lower ends of the belts C-D being made iush or even with the bottom of the sole; but for heavy draught or winter shoes, these lower -ends are intended to be made so as to project downward beyond the bottom of' the sole B in a pointed or wedged shape, to` serve as ealks, as indicated by the dotted lines z in iig. 2.

Operation: It will be seen that this shoe w'ill'allow the natural, free spreading required in the animals foot in a perfect manner; that as the two parts of `the belts C-D are merely inserted in then-respective mortises in the sole B, they can be readily withdrawn and rrr-inserted in fitting the shoe to the hoof, or in substituting rough or smooth bottoms.

I wish it to be understood that I do not intend to confine myself, in the manufacture of this nailless shoe, to the use of the eye c and clinch tl in connecting the two parts C and D ofthe belt-s together, 'as they may be connected `as securely by means ot' a screw-bolt and'nut, or by means of `a rack, as in my former invention or improvement in nailless horse-shoes; but having fully described my improvement herein, what I. claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is confined to the following, viz: v l

1. I claim attaching the. belts to the sole B' by means of the tapering mbrtises I1', and the corresponding enlargements d on the lower ends of the said belts, substantially as described and set forth.

2. I claim the combination of the belts C and I) with the enlarged heads d and clasp d c', operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
