Description

MOSES O. POTTER, OF SOUTH SCITUATE, RHODE lsLAND Y Laws Param: No. roeoofdafed october 29, 18,67.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRBELS FOR WINDING YARN.
Be it known that I, MOSES O. POTTER, of South Scituate, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented anew and` useful Improvement in Creels for Running Yarn from the Spool on to the section-beams for dressing suoh yarn, or other purpose; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference .being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon` I l The nature of my invention consists in having a fixed spindle or skewer upon said creel instead of using a removable one, and which are 'of dii'erent sizes and lengths, according to the fineness or coarseness of the work, adapting the same to cotton, woollen, linen, or other yarn, in cotton, woollen, linen, or other mills.
I construct this improved creel by having small plates of iron or brass, or other metal, A, Figure 1, preferring them made of cast iron, two and a half inches, more or less, in'length, and about one inch, more or less, in width, and from one-sixteenth to one-quarter of an inch in thickness, having upon the surface or face ot' said plates the upper and lower parts of the joints of a hinge projecting therefrom, at or near the edge upon one side, B, g. 1; and upon said face4 of said plate, upon the opposite side, at or near the edge ofthe same, :t ca tch or latch for one end of said spindle or skewer to drop into, C, fig. 1, the other end of which spindle or skewer is confined between said upper and lower parts of said hinge, D, tig.`1, and is secured therein by ay pin passingthrough said upper and lower parts of said hinge and through the end of said spindle or skewer, which forms said central part of said hinge-joint', so that said spindle or skewer, H, iig. 1, may swing out'aud in upon said pin, and be kept always in its place. The spool I, fig. 1, used upon said creel, with the yarn thereon, is slipped upon said'spindle or skewer with one hand, being unlatehed at the same time with the lother hand; and when the yarn upon said spool becomes exhausted, said spool is removed in the same manner, by nnlatching said spindle 'or skewer, lto replace the same with another spool with yarn thereon. Said plates are affixed by screws K, fig.
1, to the bars L,ig. 1, of which said creel is formed, in alternate rows, and the plate to which one of said spindles or skewers is affixed serves as the catch or latch for the spindle next to the same.- Said spindles are placed in a horizontal, vertical, or other order.
Said improvement is economical in comparison with the modes now in use, by the saving of time, in the facility it affords in removing, changing, or replacing said spools upon the crecls. It also obviatcs the necessity of bushing or tipping the spindle-hole of the spool with iron or other material, decreasing materially the cost of said spools, andthey will remain longer in use without being replaced with new ones.
Olaz'm. What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l -A Creel-plate, (for creels used in transferring yarn from the spools to the section beams, &c.,) with a hinge and catch or latch combined, with the spool-spindle or skewer permanently aixed in said hinge, and swinging and latching upon the same'alternately, as the case may be, and as herein described and set forth.
