Beit known that I, GEORGE H. CHANCE, a` citizen of the United States, and a resident of j Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Picture-Hangers; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, andto letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.

The invention relates to devices for facilitating the operation of hanging pictures; and it consists in the novel construction and conibinations of parts, all as hereinafter set forth.

In the' accompanying drawings the letter ct designates the end of a pole or rod of suflieient length to reach to the position of the picturenail or hanger-molding on the'wall. To this pole is attached the double-hook device b, having the shank c and the separated bent or angular arms d d, proceeding from the shank, these .arms being overhanging, parallel, and termi- Eating in the upturned hook ends e e, between which is an interval f of sufficient breadth to span the head of a picture-nail or the molding-hook f. To the shank c on the opposite side from the hooks is connected a l clasp or grip g, consisting of th'e rigid jaw G In order to hang a picture, the picture-cord e is placed in positionto engage the two hook ends e e, and when the instrument is raised the picture will be lifted by means of itsV cord. Betweenthe hook ends the cord is exposed, so that the double hook can be placed with its arms or branches spanning the picture nail or hook, over which the exposed portion of the cord between the hook ends is held. Then by lowering the instrument the cord will be left in proper position and in engagement with the picture-nail or moldinghook.

The instrument is serviceable not only for hanging the hooks and pictures, but also for taking them down or altering their position when desirable. l

Having described this invention, Vwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-'- A picture-hanging instrument havingaver= tical shank, a pair of jaws attached thereto, and extending horizontally therefrom, one of said jaws being rigidly attached to the shank, and lthe other of said jaws consisting of a 'horizontal vbar pivotally attached near one end to the first jaw, and a gripping portion attached to the horizontal portion at or near the middle, means for attaching a pull-cord at the opposite end of said horizontal bar, and a spring for holding the pivoted jaw pressed toward the stationary jaw, substantially as specified.
