UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BOYD, OF BOTHWELL, SCOTLAND.
KNEE-BRAKE FOR STOPPING SPINNING-S PINDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,138, dated May 2'7, 1902.
Application filed February 1,1902. Serial No. 92,140. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BOYD, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Bothwell, county of Lanark, Scotland, have invented Improvements in Knee-Brakes for Stopping Self-Contained and other Kinds of Spinning and Doubling Spindles, of which the following is specification.
My said invention relates to improved arrangements of lever knee-brakes for stopping and starting self-contained spinning and doubling spindles and other kinds of spindles when it is desired to do so.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side and plan views of my improved lever kneebrake. V
In the drawings the brake-lever is applied so as to act on the front inside face 11 of the bottom flange of the spindle-wharve 12. In this case the lever 10 is by preference centered right under the inside face 11 on a wire 13 in a gab 14, which may be an addition to or form partof the bolster 15, as shown in the drawings, and fixed to the back of base of bolster 15 a spindle-holding-down catch 16 is mounted. The lever has a vertical projecting brake part 17 ,faced with leather 18 or some other suitable material, and is properly shaped to act on the inside surface 11,referred to. If not counterweighted, the brake is kept out of action, and its vertical projecting part 17 is kepthard back against the bolster 15, as shown in the drawings, by a spring 19. -At its lowest end the lever has a broad curved surface 20 for the knee or limb of the operator to act on, by which with verylittle pressure the spindle can be stopped or gently started.
My improved knee-brake may be advantageously adapted not only to self-contained ring-spindles, but also to many other kinds of spinning and doubling spindles.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is In spinning or doubling machines, the combination of the bolster-and spindle having-a flanged wharve with a pivoted brake-lever, having a brake part projecting within the wharve-flange and adapted to act on the inner face thereof and at the other end of the lover a projecting part for the knee or limb of the operator to act on, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN BOYD.
