Description
NlTlE TTES CHARLES PANGBORN, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
COMPOSITION OF MATTER FOR WELDING STEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,979, dated May 27, 1902.
Application filed August 13, 1901.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES PANGBORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Composition of Matter to be Used for the IVelding of Steel, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the approximate proportions stated, viz: Iron chips, eighty-five pounds; boracic acid, fifteen pounds; gelatin, six ounces; water, one and one-fourth quarts. The gelatin is to be dissolved in the Water by heating together and then added to the iron chips and thoroughly mixed. Then add the acid and mix thoroughly. (The gelatin is merely to make the acid adhere to the iron.)
By the use of the above compound steel can be welded as easily as iron.
I am aware that compositions have been used and patented containing borax and other ingredients for the same purpose; but I am not aware that boracic acid has ever been used for welding. A composition containing Serial No. 71,922- (No specimens.)

What I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Boracic acid combined with small particles of iron or steel for welding.
2. The combination of boracic acid, iron or steel, gelatin, and water, in the approximate proportions named above for a Welding compound.
