JOHN SGANLAN, 0F CHICAGO. ILLINOIS. Letters Patent No. 70,028, dated October 22, 1867; antedated October 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT INV ran' CONSTRUCTION or noorINa.-
dttt Simula maar te in ttes: tt-ta's ittica mit mating not ai the Sanc.
VT O ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, .loIIN SCANLAN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new und useful Improvement in Felt-Roofing; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is o full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and gures marked thereonywhich form part of this specification.
My invention 'consists in anovel arrangement pf layers of felt, or its equivalent, with a layer of canvas or cloth, forming together an article of ready-madefelt-roong superior in point of strength and durability.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed'to describe the same with .particularity,. making reference in se doing to'the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figurcl represents-my invention as applied in layers or strips upon a roof, and
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of one of the strips of roofing5 Similar letters of reference denote the same parts of my invention in the diernt figures.
A A represent the 'stripsof the prepared roofing as arranged in consecutive layers, overlapping each other in the saine manner that the courses of shingles overlap each other on a shingled roof. Each strip, A, of the rooting is made in the following manner: The lower stratum, marked a, consists of a layer of felt, of therequired width and any desired lengtb,'saturated with coal tar, or its equivalent. The next layer,-'b, consists of canvas or cloth, which has been'fshrnnk and saturated with coal tar, and is'of the same width and length as the stripe, and is` arranged Vupon it in the manner shown, one edge of the canvasoverlapping the corresponding edge of the felt. The next layer consists of felt, of the same dimensions as those above named, also saturated with coal tar, and afterwards passed through and coated on both sides'with a melted water-'proofing composition, and having been prepared, as aforesaid, said layer c is arranged upon the canvas in the same manner that the canvas was arranged upon the felt layer below it, as described. Upon this layer c is arranged in like manner a strip of felt saturated in coal tar, when the whole strip is passed longitudinally between .suitable pressing-rollers, which compress and form the di'erent strata into .one strip, A, which may be rci'edup for storage or transportation in strips of any desired width and length.
A ve'ry important feature in my invention, and-one which isl applicable to all kinds of ready-made rooting of this class aliko, is the mode of overlappingr the various strata" composing the roong, whether of three, four, or more layers, a, b, c, d, and so on, so that the edges of the strips which overlap each other, when laid upon the'roof, are thinner than the body of the strips, and thus when laid are at the laps only of the same thickness substantially as at the other parts of thereof, thus obviating'the formation of ridges or gutters across the roof to retain rain and snow at the points where the strips join, which would obviously be the case if the overlapping cdges of the strips were not constructed in the manner herein shown.
My'invention, in regard to this roofing, consists, then, of-two points, one of which is the roofing composed of the layers of material specified, whether the provision for thinning the edges of the strips is used or not; and 'the other consists in the overlapping of the edges of the di'erent strata of material composing the strips of roofing, whether said layers are four in number, and the same as herein described, or whether` there be more or fewer or other layers composing-.the strips of roong A.
' This roong may he applied readily by any one, by arranging it upon the roof as shown and. described, and securing the same in Vany suitable manner, and theordinary gravel coating may then be put on, if desired.
V.Having described my invention, I will now specify whatI claim,l and desire to secure by Letters Patent;
1. I claim'so arranging the'several layers of material used in forming the strips of felt-roofing, as'to make the odges'of said strips thinner than the central portions, substantially in the manner and for the purposes specified.
2. I claim, as a new article of manufacture, the roofing-strips, composed of the material and arranged in thc several layers herein specified.
JOHN SCANLAN.
