a -PO RTABLE l NHAL|NG APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 700,232, dated May Y 20, ieoa.
'To all whom itmay concern chant, residing at Lyons,'(whose postal ad Beit known thatwe, JEAN PLANEUR, merdress is 1 Grande Rue St. (Jlair, Lyons,)'and LOUIS'DUTREMBLAY, doctor of medicine, re-
' sidingat Paris, France,- (whose postal address .is 9 Rue de la Chausse dAntin, Paris,) citizens of the Republic'of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Portable Inhalin g Apparatus, of which thefollo'wing is a specification. y
is particularly applicable for use on board ship for diminishing the efiects of seasickness. r V I The apparatus consists,princi pally, of a steel vessel (1, which may be of any suitable form Finally, a flexible tube 61, of india rubber or and which, for example, as shown in the ac companying drawing, may have the form of a cylinder. At the upper part of this vessel a tap b is arranged, serving for the filling of said vessel and for closing it tightly, and for this object a stopper, is provided with a special arrangement necessitating the use of a key of peculiar form, thus preventing the use of the apparatus bya stranger. In continuation of the tap an expander c is arranged for limiting the pressure of the escaping gas, so as to allow the gas to be easily inhaled.
metal, is terminated by a mask e for covering the nose and mouth and capable of being retained on the face by any suitable means. Further, :the expansion device has an operating-key f, easily accessible by the person using the apparatus and which allows him.to regulate or stop the escape of' the gas as desired. I
The working or this apparatus willbe easily understood, and its handling is very simple.
The apparatus possesses the following advantages over the india-rubber balls at present employed: The gas does not assume a disagreeable smell in the steel reservoir. Fur- Application filed March 18, 1902. seam No. 98,820. (No man.)
ther,'a' larger quantity of oxygen is concen tratedin a smaller space, and consequently,
the inconvenience ot'carrying'the' apparatus is diminished. Further, the expansionofthe compressed gasconveys the oxygen to the breathing organs of, the patient at a: much lower-temperature than the surrounding air,
which of itself produces an agreeable sensation.
is not the case'with india-rubber balls.
It is needless to state that the forms and dimensions of-the inhaling apparatus hereinbefore described may vary according to requirements-and to their particularapplications. lhe relative arrangement'of the constituent parts of our apparatus may also be modified, if desired."
We declare that what we claim is;
A portable inhaling apparatus specially adapted for diminishing theeft'ects of seasickness, consisting of a steel vessel a com taining pure oxygen under pressure and provided witha tap b1for .filling and closing it,
such tap being formed in such a way as tobe only capable of being opened or closed by means of a special key, an expander 0 connected with a branch of the tap b for regulating the pressure of theescaping gas, and provided with a handle or key f easily accessible to the person using the apparatus, and a flexible' tube (1 having at its free.- end a mask 6' adapted to fit over the nose and mouth of the patient, substantially as described.
Further,v the pressure isalways maintained, and-the gas'is "thus caused to penetrate fully into the pulmonic alveolas, which In witness whereof we have hereunto set v I
