GEORGE CHARLES LENNOX LENOX, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
MOORING BLOCK OR CLUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,914, dated September 30, 1902.
Application filed June 30,1902.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE CHARLEs'LEN- NOX LENOX, manufacturer, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 9 Martins Lane, Cannon street, in the city of London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in anchors of the kind generally known as mooring blocks or clumps. These as at present constructed have had their mooringchain fixed to an eye at their front, with the result that they have a tendency to mount into a vertical position when subjected to a strain in unyielding ground or to lift in front, so as to skid over the ground in loose soil.
According to this invention the mooring block or clump is preferably hollow and wedge-shaped, wider and deeper at the back than in front and having a bar or shank hinged to its back and Working through a slot situated in itsfront. This slot is formed in such manner that the block is free to rise or fall through a limited angle.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan.
The mooring block or clump a has a substantially vertical back plate, a front plate, which is narrower than the back plate and is inclined backward and upward, and two side 1 Serial No. 113,827. (No model.)
plates, which incline inward and upward. The front plate is provided with a narrow vertical slot a and through this slot extends the shank b, which is pivoted at a to the back plate. The shank is attached at its front end to a chain c and can move vertically to a limited extent in the slot a What I claim is-- 1. The combination with a wedge-shaped mooring block or clump provided with a narrow vertical slot at the front of a shank passing through the slot having a limited vertical movement therein and pivoted at the rear of it.
2. The combination with a hollow wedgeshaped mooring block or clump consisting of a back plate a slotted front plate inclining backward and upward and two side plates of a shank passing through the slot and pivoted to the back plate.
3. The combination with a hollow wedgeshaped mooring block or clump consisting of aback plate a slotted front plate narrower than the back plate and inclining backward and upward and two side plates inclining inward and upward of a shank passing through the slot and pivoted to the back plate.
GEORGE CHARLES LENNOX LENOX.
