To all whom it may concern:

MCMASTERS,a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Ohenango and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gioves and Mittens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,

My invention will be hereinafter more fully described in detail and then specifically defined in the appended claims, and is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is an elevation of the front or palm part of the mitten embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the back and palm sides of a mitten, respectively, showing welt and joining-seams, the protecting-strip folded twice upon itself and in section. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing in section parts with the welt continued to form the two protecting-pieces. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the welt used to form one of the protecting-strips bent upon itself and over which is stitched a second guard or protecting-strip. Fig. 6 is a similar view in section, showing a slight modification in which the welt is bent upon itself, with its ends forming two protecting-strips stitched one over the other; and Figs. '7 and 8 are different modifications, each of which, however, shows the essential feature of my invention which comprises the double protecting-shield.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and B designate, respectively, the back and palm sides of a mitten, and O designates a welt, which is stitched between the inner ends of the pieces A'and B, as shown, by stitching represented by letter E, which is the usual construction in themanufacture of mittens.

In Fig. 6 the welt is formed by being bent upon itself,with its two ends outwardly disposed and bent upon themselves and stitched in the manner illustrated in the other figures, and in Figs. 7 and 8 are slight modifications, each of which, however, shows the essential feature of my invention,for which I claim advantages over the other forms of construction heretofore patented, in that I provide double protecting-swim or guard-pieces for covering the seams.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a double guard-strip is provided which protects perfectly for the reason that it covers the joining-seam beneath threefolds of flexible skin or cloth and will withstand more lateral strain than a single guard-piece, for the reason that each fold has a stitched point of bearing on the back or front of the mitten or glove on either side of the closing-seam, thereby making the life of the mitten or glove longer and producing practically two inseamed guards with an outseamed guard thrown over them.

I am aware that it is common in the art to make gloves and mittens with protectingstrips which cover the seams which join different parts of the mitten or glove together, and hence I do not claim, broadly, said construction.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As an improved article'of manufacture, a glove or mitten with double protectingguards, each sewed to the back and palm side thereof respectively by separate rows of stitching, as set forth.

I 2. As an improved article of manufacture, aglove or mitten, comprising in combination with the'back and palm sides thereof with a welt in thejoining-seam thereof, a protectingshield folded twice upon itself forming an innershield covering the joining-seam, and an outer shield stitched over the inner shield, as set forth.

3. As an improved article of manufacture, a mitten or glove comprising front and back sidesjoined together by aseam with welt therein, a double protecting'guard-piece of cloth or skin which is stitched to said frontand back pieces adjacent to the welt, one end of the protecting or guard piece bent upon itself and stitched to said front and back respectively, the outer end of the protecting-strip being bent upon itself and stitched over the inner end, thus forminga double guard-piece, as set forth.
