GEORGE OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
i LABEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,326, dated September 16, 1902.
Application filed .Tune 21,1902. Serial No. 112,687. (No model.)
To tZZ whom, tm/ty concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGEE. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Washington, in the District of Oolnmbia, Ahave invented new and useful Improvements in Labels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto an improvement in labels; and the object is to provide a transferable imprint; and it comprises a medium composed of gelatin, with a backing to give it strength made of flexible material, transparent, opaque, or otherwise, andhhaving slits, slots, or perforations therein, the gelatin and backing being made to adhere to each other and the 'subject-matter to be transferred be` ing applied on the medium thus formed in such manner that it transfers itself whenthe label is properly placed upon the surface or object to be labeled. The gelatin portion is the same as that disclosed in LettersPatent, No. 702,350, granted to me June 10, 1902; but the backing of the present invention is of material such as thin or thick tissue-paper, transparent or otherwise, or other paper than tissue-paper, made transparent or not, as desired, or it may he of textile or other woven material, such as cheese-cloth or the like, and for the purposes of my present invention this backing is slitted, slotted, or perforated to `give an open-Work, formation.
The present invention still further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed ont in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved label, showing the perforated backing through it in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view of the-opposite side of the label. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a view ofthe same, showing slits instead of perforations. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing slots in lieu of slits or perforations; and Fig. 6 is a view of a label having its backing made of cheese-cloth or other textile fabric and perforated, slitted, and slotted to indicatethat either formmay be used.
The label consists of two essential partsnamely, the transparent, adhesive, and soluble gelatin A, which is precisely the same as disclosed in the patent referred to, and the backing B, which may be made of paper, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, both inclusive, or of textile fabric, as shown in Fig. 6. Whatever material this backing is made of it is my intention to provide it with perforations, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, as .indicated at 1 1, or with slits 2 2, as shown in Fig. 4:, or slots 3 3, as indicated in Fig. 5. The twonamely, the gelatin and backing-are made to adhere to each other, and the backing gives strength and support to the gelatin. and prevents the gelatin of adjacent labels when in a package together, as they are usually put together, from adhering to one another. Furthermore, by giving the backing, whether of paper, tissue-paper, cheese-cloth, or other material, an open-Work formation it is prevented from curling and cracking when applied to the moist surface ofmeat or other object to be labeled. When the label is thus formed, it is given its printed legend in reverse on the gelatin side in indelible transferable ink, so that when applied it leaves an imprint upon the surface labeled in legible print, either through the backing, which may be left on, or from the surface of the meat or other object labeled by removing the backing.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and henceI do not Wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A label or transfer, comprising a soluble gelatin having the label subject-matter or transfer matter thereon, and a backing of flexible material having perforations, slits or slots formed therein.
2. A label or transfer comprising a medium which consists in soluble gelatin, and an open-work paper backing, the medium having the transfer matter imprinted on one side thereof.
3. A label or transfer, comprising soluble gelatin, and a backing of tissue-paper perforated slitted or slotted, and the medium thus formed carrying the transfer matter thereon.
IOO
4. A label or transfer, comprising soluble specification in the presence of two subscribi `gelatin and a backing of tissue-paper perfoing witnesses.
rated slitted or slotted, and the medium thus formed carrying the transfer matter on the l GEO. E. HOWARD.
