Be it known that I, EDWARD M. HEYLMAN, of the eity of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of l'Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn- Planters, of which the following is a specifi` cation.
This invention relates to reels for automat-I ically windingaud unwinding chcck-row wire.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means for automatically moving the wire along.; the reel as it wound up, so that the wire will be deposited on the reel in uniform layers,'and another object is to provide an efficient simplified friction-controller for the reel.' I
The invention is exemplified in the structure hereinafter' described, and itis defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan of so much of a planter as is 'needed to explain myinvention. Fig. 2 is an elevation ofthe wire-guide mechanism.
The rear frameof a'planter is shown at 1, an axle-shaft ati?, and a coveringwvheel at A seat-bar 4L is' connected at its front end with the planter-frame, and it extends obliquely pward and rearward above the axleshaft A bracket 5 is secured to aside bar of the planter-frame, and it provides a joui nal for a wor1n-wheel (i. A worm 7 is fastened onto shaft in mesh with wheel o', and it provides means for imparting the motion of the covering-wheel to the worm-wheel. A bracket ll is secured to the seathar 1 above shaft 2. A guide-arm 9 is pivoted to bracket 11, and an eye 10 is formed in the lower swing:- ing end of the guide-arm. A pitlnan 8 :is pivoted in the worin-wheel, oll'I the center thereof, and connected pivotally with the `:guide-bar I). The reel-shaft 12 isjournaled in brackets secured to the planter-frame and ie located beneath the seat carried by bar e. A chain 2O transmits lnotionfrom a sprocketwheel 19 cn the axle-shaft to a sprocketwheel 21 fixed on the shaft of the reel. The reel is mounted loosely on the shaft. A cone 15 is fixed to orforzned onithe reel-shaft ad.- jacent to a side of the reel. A hooked lng le is formed on a side of the reel, oft the center thereof. A brake-arm 16 has one of its ends in engagement with lug 14.-, its central part engaging the cone 15 and its other end projecting beyond the shaft on the side thereof opposite lug 14. A bolt 17 extends through the swingable end of the brake-arm, anda spring 1S bears against a washer on the rod and against the arm.
AsV the planter travels forward motion is 'transmitted to shaft 12 through the chaingearine, and the brake-arm is pressed against cone l5 with sufficient force to compel the reel to travel with the shaft under ordinary circumstances, while permitting slippage of the reel on the shaft when tension on thewire becomes excessive. Preparatory to reeling up, the Wire 22 is passed through the eye l0 of the ,cuide-armi) and attached to the reel. Then as 'the Wire is wound onto the reel the worm slowly rotates wheel 6, imparting an oscillating motion to arm 9 through pitman 8 and gradually moving .the wire from end to end of the reel. The motion of the guidearxu is so timed with relation to the rotation of the reel that the wire is Wound onto the reel iu approximately uniform layers.
I claim-e- 1. The combination with the axlelshaft of a planter and a reel journaled crosswise of the planter-fraine,ofa worm on the axle-shaft, a worm-wheel in mesh with the Worm, a Wiregnide and a pitman connecting the wireguide with the worm-wheel.
2. The combination with the axle-shaft of a planter and a reel journaled crosswise of the planterframe,of a worm on the axleshaft, a worin-wheel in mesh with therworln, an oscillating arm carrying a wire-guide in its swinging ond and a pitman connecting the worin-wheel with the arm.
3. The coinbinationwith the axleshaft of a plantel' and a reel journaled crosswise of theplanter-framefaseat-barabove the anlesljat, an armipvotally connected with the seat-bar, a wire-guide in the swinging end of the arma Worm on the axleshaft, aworm wheel in mesh with the worm and a Pitman connecting the worm-wheel with the arm.
