MARTIN PRIOR BOSS, OF SAN FRANCIS-CO', CALIFGRNA, ASSGNOR T0 HYDRO-CARBON SMELTING CO., 0F NEW7 YORK, N. Y., A CDRPORA- A TION 0F WEST VIRGINIA.
:een stss'rfrennnes SPECIFICATIO forming part of Letters Patent No. '708,1 16, dated September 2, 1902. Anpnmm and my 1s, 1to1. semi so. 68,738. in@ inode.)
To alZ whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN PRIOR Boss, a citizenof the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California.,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in iron Blast-Furnaces; end I dohereby declare the following' to be a, full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to blast-furnaces; and
it has for its object the adaptation ofsueh fnrhaces for liquid hydrocarbonfUeLeSpecially the heavier oils, such as crude petroleum.
The essentiel feature of myinvention con,- sists in the introduction to the shaft or lireroom, ina. piene below that at which the airblest is introduced, of a. snpplycr feed of liquid hydrocarbon fuel or the vapor therefrom to effect the cerbonizing and bytheregnla.- tion of this supply or feed to obtain at vwill e. product of cest-iron or of steel.
It also consists in the novel combination, with the air-blast twyers, of the main oil or gas feed end spraying-jet endin theircombination in the furnace with the cerbonizingfeed below, ell as I shall now more fully describe by reference to the accompenyingdrawings, in which-'- Figure l' is e vertical section of my furnace on line a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a.' section on line y y of Fig. 1'. Fig. 3 is an enlarged Vertical section of one well of the shaft or lireroom. Fig. 4 is e. front View of the :tiri-blast' or twyer csp.
A. is the masonry of the furnace, formed with the inclined feed-tunnel a, with e month and suitable feed a. at its upper end and terminsting at its lower end in the vertical weier-jacketed shaft or fire-room-B, having et its hase the Crucible or hearth Z1.
C represents the air-blast twyers, fitted in the sheft-wnlls end opening into the interior. There may be es many of these as desired. I have here shown e. number both on the front and beck Wells of the shaft and in two plaines or rows, so theft they are evenly and fully distributed. Over the outer end of each twyer is secured a. csp c, Figs. 3 ende,V with which the branch d from the air-pipes E, Figs. 1 end 2, communicates, seid air-pipes being supplied from the mein E' below. -A.'removable cap c on cap o affords access te the twyer, v
Figs. 3 and 4.
Fittedin the shaft-Weli is the feed device F for the oil or' gas. -There is one of these near each twyer. It is fitted at a. 'downward inclination and opens at its lower end into the twyer, near the inner end of the latter. It
receives its supply of oil from any suitable source.
Fitted to eachtwyex-cap c is a. pipe G, which extends intol the twyer and terminates in such position with relation to the oilfeeder F thet e jet'ofcompressed air derived from proper source meeting theoil will properly spray it into the shaft B.
Fitted in the walls of shaft Bin e pleno below the twyers are feeders H in. suitehle numy Icleim es new, end desire to secure by Letters 1. In' s. blast-fu rnece, e Weter-jncketed firechember, e twyer extending therethrough, en oil-feeder inserted through the water-jacket of seid chamber end communicating with the interior of the twyer st e. point intermediate of its ends, and en sir-feeder projecting into the twyer, and adopted to discherge et e. point adjacent to the point of discharge from the oil-feeder.
2. In e blast-furnace, :t water-jeekoted firechamber, e twyer extending therethrough, an inclined oil-feeder projecting through the outer Wall of said chamber and into Athe upper portion of the'twyer et n. point intermediate of its ends, 'and en air-feeder projecting into the seid twyer and arranged to discharge at a, point adjacent to the point of discharge from the oil-feeder.
3. In a. blast-furnace, a. fire-chamber, s twyer extending through thewell thereof, an oilfeeder projecting through seid Well et a.
ICO
4. In a blastfurnace having an air-blast twyer extending through the wall thereof, an
oil-feeder inserted through the wall of said twyer, a cap-plate c fitting over the outer end ot' thetwyer and an airfeeder projecting into the twyer through said cap-plate and adapted to discharge at a pointadjacent the discharge from the feeder at an angle thereto, substantially as described.
5. In a'blast-fnrnace having. an air-blast twyer extending through the wall thereof, an oil-feeder inserted through the Wall of said twyer,a relatively datcap-plateflttingoverthe outer `end ofthe twyer and an air-feeder pLQ- jecting into the twyer through said capplate and adapted to discharge at a point adjacent the 4discharge from the feeder at an ang-le thereto, and a removable auxiliary cap covering an opening inthe cap-.plate in alinemen't with the twyer, substantially as described.
6. In a blast-furnace, a water-jacketed tirechamber, air blast twyers O' extendingthrough and supported' at opposite 'alined points in the opposite Walls of said chamber, oil-feeders passing through the water-jacket of said chamber and leading into said twyers and valved. feeder-pipes H below said twyers lC also extending through and supported at alined points in the opposite Walls of the Waterfjacket, substantially as described.
7. In a blastffurnace, a Water-jacketed rechamber, a twyer extending thereth-rough,
and oil and'air feeders associated with said vtwyer and projecting thereinto and arranged.
to discharge into the fire-chamber, said oilfeeder passing through the water-jacket of saidchamber, substantially as described.
8.. In a blast-furnace, awater-jaeketed'rechamber, 'an air blast twyer C extending through and supported in theopposite walls of said chamber, an oil-feeder passing through the Water-j acket of said chamber and leading intov said twyer, anda second feeder-pipe H below said twyer and also extending through the Waterjacket ot the dre-chamber and arranged to discharge into said .rechamber, substantially as described.
YIn witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
i .MARTIN PRIOR BOSS.
