IMPROVEMENT IN GAR-COUPLING.
dig: Brigitta name to in that itettas new: zmt mating part at. its same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, PETER BAKER, of Oakland, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Oar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur. A I
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use the invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to car-couplers, and consists of new and certain improvements for making them selfcoupling, and also for making them adjustable vertically, so that cars of difi'erent heights may be conveniently coupled. In the drawings- 7 I Figure 1 is a view of a longitudinal vertical section on the line at z of fig. 2, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view. I
In making my car-coupler, Iconstruct the draw-head A of any desired size, and in the usual general form. The coupling-pin B, I make of wrought iron, with its lower end hook-shaped, as shown in fig. 1, and provided with a flange, a. This flange, a, rests upon theupper side of the draw-head A, and supports the coupling-pin B. The upper end of the coupling-pin B, I provide with a slot, 6, and in this slot 6 pivot a lever, O, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. On the upper side of the bumper end of the draw-head A, I place an upright, c, with a slot, d, in its upper end, to hold the lever C when placed in that direction, andon the upper side of the rear end of the draw-head A, I place two pins, of, one on each side of the crank-shaft D, as shown in fig. 2. The space between the pins 0 or f, and the crank-shaft D, I use for resting and locking-places for the lever 0 when turned in that direction. Over the coupling-pin B, I place a hiuge,E, pivoted at g, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. This serves to keep the coupling-pin B in a vertical position, and, in connection with the flange a, keeps it in place. The frame F of the rearend of the draw-head A, I extend laterally and vertically, as shown in both figures, and provide it with two slots, as shown by the dotted lines in fig. 2. Through these slots I pass two bolts, 72 1', provided with large heads, so as to hold the draw-head A in a line'parallel with the cars, and to permit it to be adjusted vertically. The bolts 7t 2' are connected to a stout frame, G, in the rear of the frame'F. The frame G, I connect in any of the usual methods with the car. On the rear of the frame F, I make a loop, j, which may also he used in holding the draw-head A in a horizontal position, as shown in fig. 2. Through the centre of the frame F, I pass the crankshaft-D, having its up pcr end bent in the form of a crank, 7:, and its lower end provided with a screwthrcad, Z, turning in anut, m, attached to the lower side of the frame I and with its extreme lower end resting upon and turning in a hearing, at, which is rigidly attached to and forms part of theframe G.
In operating mycar-coupler, I place the pin B with its hooked end turned inward, as shown in fig. 1. As the coupling-link o enters the coupling-box p, it strikes against the curved sideof the hooked end of the coupling-pin B, and raises the pin and passes under it, when the end of the pin dropsthrough the link 0, and the coupling is complete. To uncouple, it is only necessary to swing the lever 0 around, as shown by the red lines in the figures, when the coupling-link, pulling against thecurved end of the pin B, will raise it as before, and the coupling-link will be released. When the cars are of different heights I turn the crank 7c in whichever direction is required for elevatingor lowering the draw-head A. As the lower end of the crank-shaft D cannot move vertically, the screw Zin turning through the nut m will'clevate or lower the draw-head A, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is I 1. The coupling-pin B, provided with the flange a, in combination with the hinge E and lever C, when arranged to operate substantially as herein described and for the purpose set forth. v
2. The draw-head A, when arranged to be adjusted vertically, in combination with the frame G, substantially as herein described.
PETER BAKER.
