TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that we, EDWARD P. Woons and DANIEL SHnRwooD, both of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Machine for Forming up Wire Dish-Stands, Egg-Boilers, Ste.; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, figures and letters of reference thereon making part of this specification. Of the said drawingsi Figure 1 represents the machine in'perspective.

Prior to the date of our invention, wire dish-stands, egg-boilers, &c., made of wire, wound in spiral form, and kept in proper place by being secured to frameworkcross-wires, were made by hand, being very imperfect and irregular, and the operation slow and expensive.
Our invention obviates these diiiiculties, and renders the process of manufacturing these and similar articles more quick, and the articles more perfect and symmetricalrwhile they can also be soldat a considerable less price than the hand-made article.-
Our invention consists, first, in the employment of a cup-like disk, in the face of which is cut a groove to receive the wire; this lgroove commences atA the centre of the disk, and constantly increases in the form of a spiral until it reaches the periphery, where it continues in the form of a helicoid, which will be fully described hereafter; second, in combining with a grooved disk a bar, which forces the wire into the grooves; third, in combining with a grooveddisk a series of slots, whereby the operation of securing the spiral in its proper shape is greatly facilitated.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will describe the construction and operation thereof. v
Av represents the base, and -B the top, which are secured together by the two uprights C C in any suitable manner. F is the spirally-grooved disk or former, secured to the mandrel D by the collar- I: Back of the centre of the former is shown a bar, G, which is inserted in the slots h .7L in the frame, kand held in place by the set-screws H H. The grooved former is made as follows: We first take the disk, which has been east and finished of the proper shape and size, and securey it to the mandrel D. This is then mounted in a lathe, upon centres, having a tool-holder moved by a screw, and, by means of proper gearing, motion is imparted to the screw, and on the-tool being brought in contact with the disk, a regular spiral groove is cut, constantly increasing in size until the bevel is reached. The continuationof the groove on the bevel is cut by means of regular screw-gearing. 4The groove is cut suiliciently deep .to hold the wire, and slightly inclined towards the centre, to prevent the wire from springing out during the operation of applying the supporting frame.
Operation.
The bar Gr is removed from the frame, and the mandrel D is inserted inv its journals, in the uprights U U, and the winch E secured to the end by the screw, as plainly shown in iig. 1. The bar G is then inserted in the slots hat, and set up suiiiciently close by the screws H H to the former F, so as to force the wire into the grooves. The endl of a piece of wire, a, is now inserted in the hole e, and the wire held by sutiicient friction while the handle is turned by the operator, who guides thei wire into its proper groove, and continues the operation until the required number of grooves is filled, when the end of the wire is fastened oif at the pin c. But a few seconds are required in which to shape the wire for a dish-stand or eggboiler. The winch is removed,
und the former F taken out and set upright before the workman, who places the frame around the former F, and thelegs on the face pf the former l and over the slots c c, and with fine wire quickly secures, by interlacing, the spiral bottom andsides with the frame. The article-isthen taken from the former, and is ready to bc-.tiuned.
