IMPROVEMENT IN WELL-TUBES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH'WAGNER,ofNewcastle, inthe county of Lawrence, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Deep-Well Borers and Tubes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, suiricient to enable others skilled in the a-rt to which my invention appertains to understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make parts of this specification, and in which--v Figures 1 and 2 are side views ot' my improved. borcr and tube, and
Figure 3 is a detached view of the point and its perforated stem.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar manner of attaching the point and stem to the tube, so that from the top ofthe tube to that part of the point where its taper begins, it shall be of even size, without any of its parts projecting. l
A A, in the drawings, reprcsents'the tube, and B the point, which latter is attached to a hollow stem, C, which tits into the tube A, and is provided with rows of holes corresponding to similar rows of holes in the tube A. Corresponding with the ripper hole c in the stem C isa slot, a, in the tube A, a pin, b, passing through the slot a and hole o in such a manner that when the tube is worked toward the right,'as is done in boring, the tube A will slide around the stem C until the pin b comes against the left corner a ofthe slot a, as shown in dg. 2., whereby the holes 'in both the tube A and stem C' are closed. It is but necessary, when the well has been bored to its desired depth, tol turn theY tube A to the'V left until the pin b rests against the corner a2 of the stem C, as
shown in iig. 1when the water will be admitted, the holes in the tube A and stem C covering each other. I um aware that a patent was granted to R. F. Osgood in'18 66, in whichcase the tube and stem are'perforated and operate in a similar' manner; but in his case the stem and point, cast in one piece, slide on the outside 'of the tube, .the pin being attached to the tube, and working in a slot in the' stem. In this case all the strain of the boring is on the pin in the slot, whileiin my tool the lower end of the tube bears equally and uniformly on the shoulder d of the point B, which is ush with the tube A, By my improved arrangement no shoulder is formed on the outside of the ,tubing,'which, as in Osgo'odscas'e, would hinder the withdrawal of the tube if it becomes necessary. The point B consists of the base e, the Aangular taperf, and the short point proper, g. The advantages of constructing the point in thisv manner are, that the short pointl proper, g, serves to break any boulders which may be encountered in boring, while theangular taper serves as a reamer. In making the taper straight tothe sharp end of the point, the latter is too much weakened, andis liable to'break easily on encoun tering'hard boulders; but by my construction this diiiculty is entirely overcom'e. i
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The perforated stem C of the point lz encased within the tube A, in combination with the slot a and pin b, substantially as' and for the purpose described.
A 2. -The combination of the point B, constructed as described, with the perforated stem C, perforated tube A, slot a, and pin b, substantially as and for the purposes described.
