CH ARLES G. MILLER. CF CINCINNATI, CHIC.
7 Letters Patent No. 70,734, elated November 12, 1867.
oowt on CHIMNEY-GAP.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES G. MILLER, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have 'inv'ented'a new and useful Improvement in Chimneys, and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification My invention relates to'a chimney-top, so constructed as to prevent sparks issuing therefrom, and also to prevent wind from descending the chimney. v
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the brick-work of an ordinary chimney. B represents a case of square form, having an inner flange, O, at its lower edge, to rest upon the top of the brick 1A. The flangeC has an upturned edge, e, to which is aflixed an inner rectangular case, D. Upon the'upper side of case D are bolted bars E for the support of a horizontal plate, F. The case B has slipped upon it a top piece, consisting of the lower rim G, inclined sides H, and vertical sides I, with cap 1'. The lowerrim'G would, in many cases, be
bolted fast to the case B. Thecases B and B may be so enlarged or decreased in size at their bottoms as to fit the'outside and inside respectively of chimneys not made to the precise measurement usually adopted for household purposes, and, of course, in application to locomotives, and the chimneys of manufactories, to which my improvement is well suited, the chimney-top would vary in size, form, and material.
The size of my top would be made to suit the amount of matter passing through it. The material might be of metal, plaster, or clay tile. The shape might'vary from square to round, and of any of the intermediate several-sided figures, (in the horizontal section,) both as to the inner and outer cases B and D The operation of my chimney-top is as follows: Thesmoke, in ascending, impinges upon the plate F, when it is deflected downward andoutward into the enlarged space between the two cases B D, where the particles of soot, in the form of sparks, are deposited; the gases escaping through the top I 2'.
It is found that besides the foreinentioned advantage attained by my chimney-top 1 and soot, thereby lessening danger and dirt, it entirely does away with the smoke in a house, caused, by the wind blowing down the chimney; the plate F beingvinterposed across the direct course ofthewind.-
. I claim herein as new, and of my invention-.-
The parts B D E F H I, upon the top of a chimney, arranged substantially as described. In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand,
n retaining the sparks CHARLES e.- MILLER. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, Janus H. LAYMAN.
