DAVID I/VELLS HARRIS, OF ALAMO, TENNESSEE.
PLOW BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,935, dated August 12, 1902.
Application filed March 19, 1902.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID WELLS HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alamo, county of Crockett, and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Braces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to plow-braces, and. more particularly to braces for plow-colters.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a brace of improved and novel construction to take the place of the ordinary grass-rod, and which will secure and brace the colter withoutnecessitating the employment of cumbersome fastening means for the colter-standard, and will also brace the plowbeam and plow-standard, and one which will be of simple and inexpensive construction and adapted for application in shovel-plows.
Having the foregoing and other not specifically-mentioned objects in view, the invention consists of a brace for plows comprising certain improved features and arranged and adapted in relation to the plow-beam, colterstandard, and plow-standard in a novel manner, as set forth in detail hereinafter, while the features comprising the novelty of the invention are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of an ordinary shovel-plow, illustrating the application of the invention thereto, certain parts being shown in section; and Fig. 2, a perspective detail of the brace.
The numeral '1 designates the plow-beam, I 2 the plow-standard, and 3 the colter-standard. The plow-standard is secured to the plow-beam in the ordinary way, and the colterstandard passes through a square mortise 4 in the plow-beam.
The numeral 5 designates my improved brace, which consists of a rod bent substantially in the shape of a compound curve and provided with a loop or yoke 6 at its upper end, said loop being square and fitted over and embracing the colter-standard above the The brace is screw-threaded throughout its length except Where passing through the plow-beam. The brace passes through the plow-beam at 7 and through the plow-standard at 8. The numeral 9 designates a washer on the brace, and 10 is a tap having a handle which is threaded onthe $erial No. 981965. (No model.)
brace and adapted to screw the washer 9 up against the plow-beam 1, while 11 and 12 designate other washers located on opposite sides of the plow-standard, and 13 and 14 handletaps for screwing said Washers against opposite sides of said plow-standard.
It will be seen that by tightening the different taps the plow-beam and plow-standard can be braced in relation to each other, and the plow-beam thus supported by the brace and relieving the strain at the point of connection between the plow-beam and the plowstandard and minimizing the chances of breaking or separation at that point. The brace when suitably tightened causes the loop 6 to draw against the colter-standard and hold the said standard firmly in the mortise through which it passes, while permitting adjustment of the colter up and down to any desired degree upon loosening of the taps and Washers.
I am aware that many changes of construction could be resorted to in carrying out my invention, and I therefore lay claim to all modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a brace for plows, the combination with a plow-beam, a plow-standard and a colter-standard held in the socket or receptacle of the plow-beam, of a brace connected to the colter-standard and running through the plow-beam and through the plow-standard and connected thereto.
2. In a brace for plows, the combination with aplow-beam, a plow-standard, and a colter-standard held in the socket or receptacle of the plow-beam, of a brace having a loop or yoke which embraces the colter-standard, said brace running through the plow-beam and through the plow-standard, adjustable taps on the brace and on opposite sides of the plow-standard, and an adjustable tap on the brace and bearing against the plow-beam.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two'wit-nes'ses.
DAVID WELLS HARRIS.
