TO ALL ,WHOM- I'l MAY.CONGERN:`
Be it known that I, JONAsH. ROWE, of Hudson, in the county of Columbia, and State of New York, have invented'a new and improved. Spinning-Wheel, and that the following descriptiom taken in connection with the` accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a` full and exact specification of the same, wherein I-have set-'forth the. nature and principles of my said improvements, by which myinvention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me byLetters Patent.
This invention relates to a new and' useful improvement on .the simple spinning machine for household use, and it consists in a novel and useful modification thereof, whereby the operator can spin-while sitting ona stool or chair by the side of the machine. I' y The object of the invention is to. avoid the wal-king towards and from the spindle hitherto required, in order 'to draw out or attenuate the repingwhile being spun, and to cause vthel yarn, as spun, tobe wound upon the spindle. v
' To this end my invention consists in having'the spindle-head attached to a. radius arm arranged in such 'a manner that it may be'- movodth'rough thc medium of a treudle, and the spindle made to approachand recede from the operator at the will of the same, due provision being made for the tightening of the belts, and all con- Astrncted and arranged es hereinafter set forth. In the accompanying sheet of drawings-'- Figure 1 is a sideview of my invention.
Figure '2 aplan or top view of .the.samo.
Figure 3 a perspectiveview Ycia portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A. represen'ts'a framing or support, in which a. vertical band-wheel, B, is tted and allowed to turn freely.
C represents an inclined red, the upper end of which is attached to the framing or support A,-and the lower end att-ached to a base, D, Ion .which the framing or support A is secured. The lower part of this rod C has an oblong slot orf-opening, a, made in it, through which a set-screw, D', passes, said screw, also passing intola bur, E, having posts 5 upon it,to serve as bearings for pulleys c c and an arm, F. The pulley c is considerably. larger in diameter than the pulley c', and the latter has a belt or cord, d, passing around it, which belt or cord' i also passes around the wheel B, (see figs. 1 and 2.) The nrxn F is of considerable length, andkwhen.inclined backwafd,'-nearlylrenches the-wheel' B, andrests upon an elastic curved bar, e, attachedY to the framing or support A, as shown clearly in g. 1. l'.lo the outer end of `the arm F the spindle-head Gr is attached, und secured4 by a set-screw,f,`which,passes through an oblong slot, g, in the :rr-.1, to admit of the spindle-head having a.v certain degree of adjustment. The spindle H is of usualconstruction, and is ro'tated'by a belt or cord, Il, from the pulley ic.' t
It will be seen, therefore,l from the above description, that, by turning the wheel B, motion willb'ecommunicated tothe spindle H, through themediuni of the cords d h'.
In the lower part of thefifnnxingorfsupport A there is ya horizontal shaft, Ljhaving a crank, z', at-one end,A to which a treadle, J, is connected, and this 4shaft I has charm, K, attached te it, in the upper partof which there is secured one endjofnmonnecting-rod, L, the oppositie end of said rod being connected to the arm lill y It will be seen, therefore, that the operator, by actuating the treadle J', may move the arm F, and consequently the spindleiH, towards und from the wheel B at willht-he operator being seated on n. stc'olbythe side of 4the wheel B. The roping, therefore, while being spun, may bedrawn out or attenuatedviby the outward movement of theuarmvandspindle, and, as spun, wound upon the spindle by the inward movementfof the same. The ropings are hung over a bracket, j, en the framingor support A., and thewhole operation of spinning may be performed by n. person on the stool, all walking forwards and backwards boing avoided. Illy this improvement aged and lame persons may spin without diiliculty, the wheel B being turned by onohand, and the raping held by the other. The ropes d h are tightened when necessary, byndjusting the bar E and spindle-head G.- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The arrangement oi' Athe'vihrating a'rm F, carrying the .adjustable spindle-head G, said arxn snp-ported from the adjustable vbar E, and resting upon the `spring e, with the. adjustable bar'D,n.'nd connecting-rod-L Ypivote'din saidarm F, -as herein described, for-the purpose specified.
2,v The combination ofthe 'bent spring e with the vibrating arm F, adjustable rod C, 'and conneetingrod L, as bereindescribed, for the purpose specified.
