UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODOR H. SHOTTENBERG, OF HUBBARD, OHIO.
BOOK O-R' PARC E L CARRIER OR HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,878, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed January 30,1902. Serial No. 91,913. (No model.)
acter which will be especially adapted for holding school-books and small packages and which will becapable of clamping and holding a thin or small book, so that the same cannot become lost.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In thedrawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book andpackage carrier or holder constructed in'accordance with this invention and shown closed. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, the device being open. I
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 and 2 designate resilient sides hinged together at the bottom by means hereinafter described and converging toward the top of the carrier or holder when the latter is closed, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. proximately rectangular, are constructed -of stout resilientwire or other suitable material and are provided at their bottoms with inwardly-extending arms 3, which are connected with corresponding arms 4: of inner clamping-jaws 5, and the 1atter,whi ch converge upwardly, are adapted for engaging books, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, and they are capable of securely holding a small thin book and of efiectually preventing the same from accidentally falling out of the carrier or holder when the latter is closed. The arms 3 and 4 form approximately U-shaped loops The sides, which are apand constitute eyes, which are linked into eyes or loops 6 of a transverse'rod 7, which connects the sides of the carrier or holder. The rod, which consists of a stout piece of wire, has its ends bent to form the loops or eyes 6, and it extends across the space between the loops formed by the arms 3 and 4 and prevents any lateral'separation of the parts at the bottom of the'device. The clamping-jaws 5, which extend upward to about the center of the device, diverge from the adjacent sides and are provided with round cross-bars 8 of wood, into which the terminals of the wire are embedded; but the sides of the clamping-jaws may be connected in any other suitable manner, as will be readily understood. Each side and its clamping-jaw is constructed of a single piece of wire, which is first bent to form the rectangular side, and the side portions thereof are then bent and extended to form the bottom loops and the 'sides of the clamping'jaw.
The clampingjaws, which engage each other when the carrier is empty and the sides thereof are closed, are adapted to hold school-books or the like, and the sides 1 and 2, which extend above and which are offset from the clamping-jaws, are adapted to receive a lunch package or the like, so that such a package may be held in addition to the books. The sides are connected by a hinged frame 9, which is approximately U -shaped, being provided at its ends with eyes 10 for engaging the top connecting portion of theside 1 and having approximately U-shaped bends 11 adjacent to the eyes for the "reception of the connecting portion of the other side 2, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The transverse portion of the U -shaped frame 9 is provided with a suitable grip or handle 12, by means ofwhieh the device is carried. The hinged handle-carrying frame is of less width than the sides of the carrier or holder and is adapted to swing between the same from the position illustrated in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, and vice versa," to connect and disconnect the sides. ,The sides may, if desired, be slightly bowed to increase their capacity, and the carrier may be made of any desired size and strength.
It will be seen that the parcel-carrier is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it possesses great strength and durability, and that it is adapted for engaging and carrying two difierent kinds of parcels. It will also be apparent that the inner clamping-jaws are especially adapted for engaging and holding small books or packages,
and that the sides of the device above the clamping-jaws are adapted to receive larger packages, and that the two clamping means operate independently of each other when the carrier or holder is closed, so that the clamping-jaws may be distended or spread to receive one or more books without materially afiecting the sides 1 and 2 and that the sides may be distended without materially affecting the clamping-jaws.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising two sides hinged together at the bottom and adapted to clamp a parcel, and the clamping-jaws arranged at the lower portion of the device and connected with the sides and adapted to engage books or parcels, substantially'as and for the purpose described.
2. A device of the class described comprising twovsides hinged together at the bottom and spaced apart between their ends when the device is closed, means for holding the sides in their closed position, and the clamping-jaws connected with the sides and operating in the space between the same, whereby the device is adapted to hold and positively engage parcels or packages of different sizes, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described comprisin g two sides provided at the bottom with arms hinged together and spacing the sides apart, and clamping-jaws connected with the said arms and operating in the spaces between the sides, substantially as described.
4. A device of the class described comprising sides hinged at the bottom and provided with clamping-jaws operating independently of the sides in clamping packages or books, and a frame hinged at one side to the top thereof and provided with a loop or bend receiving the otherside of the device, said hinged frame being also provided with a grip or handle, substantially as described.
5. A device of the class described comprising hinged sides provided with lower clamping-jaws, and the approximately U-shaped frame hinged to one of the sides and provided at opposite sides with approximately U shaped loops or bends to receive the other side of the device, said hinged frame being also provided with a grip or handle, substantially as described.
6. A device of the class described comprising hinged sides provided at the bottom with inwardly-extendin g loops, means for hinging the loops together, and clamping-jaws connected with the inner sides of the loops, substantially as described;
7. A device of the class described comprising hinged sides having inwardly-extending loops at their bottom and provided with clamping-jaws, and a rod provided at its ends with eyes linked into the said loops and hinging the sides, substantially as described.
8. A device of the class described comprising upwardly-converging sides provided at the bottom with inwardly-extending arms,
the upwardly-converging clamping-jaws terminating between the top and bottom of the device and provided with arms connected with the said arms and forming loops, and
means for connecting the loops, whereby the sides are hinged together, substantially as described.
9. A device of the class described comprising sides constructed of a single piece of resilient material and provided at the bottom with inwardly-extending arms, the clampingjaws provided with cross-pieces and having sides formed integral with the sides of the device and provided with arms connected with the said arms and forming loops, and means for hinging the loops together, substantially as described.
10. A device of the class described comprising sides provided at the bottom withinwardly-extending loops, clamping-jaws consisting of side portions formed integral with the said loops, and the connecting-bars having the upper terminals of the side portions embedded in them, and means for hinging the loops, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THEODOR H. SHOTTENBERG.
