TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, DAVID HARGAR, of Des Moines, in the county of Polk, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and usefulrImprovement in Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in whichv Figure 1 represents a perspective view-of my invention attached to a furnace.

Figure 2 shows the construction of that part of the pipe which runs under the fire.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding-parts in the two figures.

The invention is for the purpose of conducting air from a fan, or from any c'old-airregion, to a furnace or grate, and distributing it properly to the fire. V 1

In the drawing, D represents the common furnace-walls supporting the boiler E, C being the fire-box, beneath which is the ash-box F. I

My invention consists of the pipe A, running from a fan situated in any part of the building, however remote from the furnace, or even in a neighboring building. and extending under and across the fire'box, in the manner show-n in the drawing. The upper. wall of the pipe, where it extends horizontally across under the irebox, is perforated with a series of small holes, a a a, which have a slide-cover, d, by which they may be opened or closed, wholly or partially, as may he required. The extremity of the pipe not attached'to the furnace may be connected with a fan, or may extend intoa draught of cold air outside of the building, for the purpose of conducting fresh air to the fire The pipe may be used in connection with the furnaces of manufacturing establishments, large or small, andfis equally adapted for application to the common stove, fireplace, 86c. By means of it a permanent and equal supply of-fresh air is fed to the fire at all times, and in the desired quantities.

It is not necessary, with this arrangement, to locate the fan in the immediate vicinity of the'furnace, where the room is often necessary for some other purpose; and the fact that it may be placed in any part of the building makes it easy often to effect a great saving, not only of room, but of power, as it may be placed so as to be Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination of the.pipe A, having the apertures a a, and provider] with the sliding cover at d, with the furnace C D F,the several-parts being constructed, arranged, and operating together, substantially in the. manner and for the purpose specified.
