TO ALL WHOM'IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ALDEN, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain improvements in Gas-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements, fully describedhereafter, in that class" of stoves in which a mixturefo f air and illuminating gas is caused to pass through wire gauze, (or a perforated plate,) above which the mixture is ignited, the object of my improvement being the regulation of the supply of air to-be mixed with the gas.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections of my improved gas-stove, and

On reference to figs. 1 and 3, Ais a cast-iron plate, having an opening for the reception of the casing B, a rib on the upper end of which rests in a recess formed at the edge of the opening. The upper portion 6 of this casing is cylindrical, as is the lower contracted portion 0, the intermediate portion olvbeing bevelled or inclined. A ring, C, enters a short distance into the recess of the plate A, which receives the rib at the upper end of the casing B, and this ring is confined to its place by a second ring, D, which is secured by set-screws or otherwise to the plate A, there being, between the two rings, a disk, E, of wire gauze or a perforated plate. To the upper cylindrical portion 6 of the casing is fitted, so as to slide freely, the upper contracted end of the cylindrical casing F, which is held in place by a set-screw, h, and which, by adjustment, may be made to cover more or .less of each of the holes z' in the casing B. A pipe, G, conveys ordinary illuminating gas to the tip or nozzle j, which is situated concentrically with andenters a short distance into the lower contracted end of the casing-B.
In gas-stoves of this class it has been ei stomary to regulate the flow of gas only in order to increase or diminish the extent and heat of the flame, the qualityof the flame depends in a great measure upon the admixture with the gas of a proper quantity of air bcfore the two combined reach the wire gauze; hence the importance of regulating the supply of air. In myimprovement, in which there is a constant supply of air passing through the contracted annular space between the tip j and the lower end of the casing B, the amount of air. passing through the openings imay be regulated at pleasure by raising or lowering the casing F.
In themodification, represented in figs. 2 and4, there is an internal tube, 111, within the casing B, the gastip j entering a short distance into this tube, which is but little larger in diameter than the tip. In the bottom of the casing are any desired number ot' openings, t, and above these is a valve or damper, n,whieh, by the aid of a pin, q, may be made to cover or expose the said openings. It will be seen that in this modification very little air can pass into the casing B, excepting through openings, the size of which can be regulated at pleasure. Although I have alluded to the casings B and F as being cylindricai, it will be evident that they may bemade square, or of othcrforins, without-departing from the main features of my invention.
Without claiming broadly the use of an exterior casing, I, as applied to gas-stoves, I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The casing Luise-gauze or perforated plate E, and holes 111', in combination with the adjustable casing F, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.-
