SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent N 0. 704,636, dated July 15, 1902.

Be it known that I, CURTIS B. HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron in the county of Summit and State of Ohio,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gheckreins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to checkreins; and it consists of certain novel features of combination and construction of parts, the preferred materialization whereof will be set forth in t5 the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide a checkrein attachment or adevice which may form a portion of the checkrein itself which shall afford the fullest degreeof elasticity consistent with a checkrein.

Other objects and advantages will be made clearly apparent from the following specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invent-ion as applied to use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device complete.

In order to conveniently refer to the several features of my invention and their co operating accessories, numerals will be employed, the same numeral referring to a simi lar part throughout both views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the checkrein proper, which may be of any desired character and extend directly from the bit backward toward the gig-saddle or may first extend upward parallel with the headstall of the bridle and pass through suitable rings located near the top of the head of the animal, as is common, and thence extend backward to the gig-saddle. My improved attachment is designed to be connected to the ends of the reins in advance of the gig-saddle, as illustrated in Fig. l,myimproved attachment consisting of a single piece of suitable resilient material, as rubber, the body portion whereof is indicated by the numeral 2, the forward end of which is bifurcated, thereby providing $eria1No. 64,029. the branches 8 and 4, each of which is provided with a ring/5 or other equivalent device whereby the forward ends of my attachment may be readily connected to the end of the contiguous rein, as by means of a snaphook, as indicated by the numeral 6 in Fig. 1. The body portion 2 is bifurcated in order that the two branches may readily extend to either side of the neck, and thus dispose the device substantially parallel with the contiguous portion of the animal. The rear end of the body portion is connected in any preferred Way to the forward end of the anchoring device 7,as by extending the same through the slot 8 in said device. The rear end of the anchoring device is provided with an aperture 9, which is designed to be engaged by the hook 10 of the gig-saddle, which latter may be of the usual or any preferred construction. The anchoring device 7 is provided upon opposite sides with the openings 11, in which engage the reinforcing rods or wires 10 as seen in Fig. 2, the other ends of which extend to and are engaged with the rings 5, as shown.

Having thus fully described the construe tion and manner of using myimproved check rein, further reference to the details is deemed unnecessary.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A checkrein comprising an extensible body portion having its forward end centrally slitted, thereby providing two branches; a ringsection for each branch, and an anchoring device having an aperture in its end connected to the rear end of the extensible body and having openings, in combination with rods 1O extending from said rings to said openings, and adapted to limit the extension of the elastic body and its branches, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
