JACOB J. HENNINGSEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y
MEANS FOR CLOSING CASKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,329, dated July 8, 1902.
Application filed November 1,1901. Serial No. 80,729. (No model.)
I) all whom it 72mg concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB J. HENNINGSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Closing Casks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will on able those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for closing casks, such as beer-casks, liquor-casks, and other and similar casks; and the invention relates particularly to means for securing an ordinary plug or stopper in a bu ng-bushing, the bung-bushing being of improved form and construction; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists of a bung-bushing for casks constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters ineach of the views, Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved bung-bushing for casks, part of the cask being shown in section, and showingalso a device which I employ for placing a hung or stopper in the bushing; Fig. 2, a plan view of a bung-hole bushing which I employ; Fig. a section thereof on the line w of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 5 a bottom plan View thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a one side of a cask, and in the practice of my invention I provide a bung-hole bushing b, which is of the usual form, except at the inner end, where an annular enlargement or chamber 19 is formed, at the lower end of which is an inwardly-directed annular flange, rim, or bead b the top of said chamber being also provided with an inwardly-directed annular shoulder I).
The outer end of the bung-hole bushing b may be formed in the usual or any preferred manner, and, as shown in the drawings, it is provided at its opposite sides with longitudinal recesses U", which communicate with an inner annular recess b and the opening in the outer end of said bung-bushing is larger than the said opening in the inner end thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the longitudinal recesses If and annular recess b are designed for use in connecting a faucet, filling-funnel, or other device with the bung-bushing and form no part of my invention.
I have also shown a device a for placing a hung, plug, orstopper in the bung-bushingb, and this device consists of a central portion 0 having a central oblong opening 0 a top tubular portion 0 and a bottom tubular-portion a which is adapted to be inserted into the outer and enlarged end of the bung-bushing Z), and in practice in order to secure a plug or stopper in the bushing b the device 0 is placed in the position shown in Fig. l, with the lower tubular end 0 thereof inserted into said bushing. The stopper is then placed in the upper end of the bottom tubular portion 0, and said stopper is driven downwardly through said tubular portion 0 0f the device 0 by means of a rod passed through the upper tubular portion 0 of said device, and said bung, plug, or stopper is driven clear through the bottom tubular portion 0 of the device 0 and into the chamber 1) of the bung-bushing b. The bung, plug or stopper may be composed of any preferred material, and it will be understood that as it is driven through the tubular portion 0 of the device cit is contracted or compressed, and when it enters the chamber b in the bung-bushing b it expands in said chamber and is held therein by the annular shoulder b at the top thereof, and when said plug or stopper has been driven into position, as above described, the device 0 is removed or detached from the bushing, and the bung, plug, or stopper remains in the chamber b of said bung-bushiug, and in order to open the bung-opening, if the latter be desired, the plug or stopper must be driven inwardly, which requires the application of considerable force in view of the annular inwardly-directed bead or flange b at the bottom of the chamber b 7 Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bung-bushing provided with the usual central bore, the upper or outer end of which is enlarged to receive astopper-placing device, the lower or inner end of said bore being also provided witli an enlarged chamber which is my invention I have signed my name, in presformed by an inwardly-directed annular enoe of the subscribing witnesses, this 30th 10 flange at the bottom thereof and a oorreday of October, 1901.
spondin inwardly-directed flan 'e at the top w 5 thereoffthe bottom flange being; beveled or JACOB HENNINGSEN' inclined, substantially as shown and de- \Vitnesses:
scribed. F. F. TELLER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as F. A. STEWART.
