IMPROVEMENT IN AXLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 69,362, dated October 1, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WEBSTER NEVINS, of Falmonth, in theeounty of Cumberland and State .of Maine, have invented a new and usefnl Improved Axle; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptiou thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsforming part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a front elevation of my improved axle. Fig. 2 is a top plan. Fig. 3 is a side or end view.

The object of my invention is to produce a means of renderingcarriages easier and more comfortable, and also of relieving the bolt from strain or jar and consequent liability to fracture when, in the progress of the vehicle, the forward or rear wheels run into depressions in the way or rise over obstacles. in such instances, with the use of the common bolt uniting the axle and rocker, repeated strains are brought upon the bolt, which cause wearing of both rocker and axle, create an unpleasant noise,duri g the movement of the carriage, and often at last'break the bolt. Besides this, by reason/of the rigidity of the bolt, when the carriage passes over inequalities'in the road, a jar is occasioned to the person in the carriage.
The object of my inventiombcfore specified, is accomplished in the following manner: Upon the upper edge of the axle a I place the metallic part b, which turns upon the said axletree, as illustrated in Fig. 2. 0 shows the bolt,
which is rigidly attached to and connected with the metallic part 1), without any bolt-head. d shows the portion upon which the body of the carriage rests, with springs or otherwise, as common. eeshow two cars rigidly attached to the part (I and moving on pivotsf in the ends of the metallic part 'or rocker-plate I).
- The manner in which the part cl moves is illustrated in Fig.3, or rather the movement of the forward axle is thus illustrated, because, in practice, the part at is rigidly attached to the carriage, or the springs thereof, so that the in- 'elination of the two parts at and a to each other will be occasioned by the forward axle-tree moving forward or backward as the carriage passes over any irregularity in the road. h h show two braces to strengthen-the union of the ears and part 01, and are secured by bolts, as illustrated. Upon the lower end of the bolt 0 may be attached a rubber washer, to prevent rattling, 86C- The device thus described is intended to be connected with the forward axle of a carriage. From this description it will be seen that as the wheels of a carriage pass over or into any inequality in the road, the axie a will incline either baekwardorforward,th11s allowing the carriage to yield gently to such irregularity, and at the same time, by reason of such tipping or inclining backward or forward on the ears and pivots before described, the bolt 0 will be relieved from all strain, inasmuch as the metallic rocker-plate b rests squarely and evenly upon the axle, and only moves from one side to the other thereupon, as when the carriage is turned. In consequence of the joint formed by the union of the ears with the ends of the metallic rocker-plate I), (see f,) a sudden backward or forward motion of the carriage, such as is occasioned byeither pair of wheels sinking into a depression or rising over any obstacle, is yielded to and relieved by such joint, thus t'reeing the bolt from liability of fracture.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the part (1, ears 6 6, joints f, and metallic rockerplate b, as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
2. The combination of the metallic rockerplate b with its bolt 0, worked into and forming a part of said rocker-plate, with the forward axle a, substantially as and for the purposes described.
