FENCE POST AND BRACE.
SPECIFICff-ATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,285, dated February 11, 190,2.

Be it known that I, LoEEN L. LESLIE, a citizen of the United States, andra resident of Hillsdale, county of Hillsdale, State of Michigan, have `invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence Posts and Braces,of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cement fence posts and braces; and the object of the invention is to provide a rigid form of post or brace, which cannot be broken by any strain to which it is subjected in any direction and which will not suffer deteriora-` tion by age or long use.
My invention consists ina molded cement body portion and in the means for reinforcing the same from lateral strain, as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the post. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the reinforcing-bars. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of a fence-corner, showing the arrangement with a large corner-post of smaller line-posts and bracebars; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the Fig. 6 is a transverse section thereof; and Fig. 7 is a transverse section of post, showing eyebolt.
. In the views, l is the molded cement body portion, in which are embedded angle-bars 2. These angle-bars are shown located one at each corner of the post or brace-bar, and have their sides 3 parallel with the sides of the angular post. These bars are shown as four in number and the post as four-sided. I do not limit the invention, however, to any particular number of sides. e
In order to give the greatest possible stiftness to the bars, their corresponding sides are A arranged on the same plane, edge presented to edge, so that from whatever direction the strain may come at least four sides will be in readiness to receive it. This makes the post practically unbreakable.
If the smooth metal should slip in the cement the cement could be made to bend or break, and to prevent this result I anticipate it by notching the edges of the bars at 4t with notches which incline toward the extremities of the bar outward each way from the center. This serves to prevent the cement from slipping in either direction and further prevents the bar from loosening and falling out of the post either way.
To give a greater grip upon the cement, some of the notched sections could be bent inward, as shown in Fig. 2 at 5, which gives them resistance against the solid interior body of the post.
In Fig. 4 the corner-post and adjacent lineposts are seen notched at 6 to provide sockets for the brace-bars 7 13, which are similarly constructed to the posts of cement body and metal angle-bars, the ends being bev'- eled to set in the sockets 6. One of these bars is shown horizontal and the other di-v agonal.
The corner-post is perforated by openings 8, which pass therethrough at right angles to each other. Through these openings the fence-wires pass, and they are secured by any common means exterior to the posts. The line-posts are also perforated` at 9, and in these perforations are placed screw-eyes l0, through which the line-Wires pass. All the posts are provided with anchors 12 or projections formed integral therewith in the mold, which serve to retain the post securely in the ground.
