BOSOM-PAD FOR SHIRTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 693,226, dated February 11, 1902 Application filed May 29, 1,899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LINDSAY M. BRYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in False Bosoms for Shirts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in false bosoms for shirts, and has for its object to provide an'article of this character of a simple and inexpensive construction adapted to be worn with any shirt to give the appearance of a freshly-laundered shirt and comprising a. plurality of detachable layers of material each formed to represent a shirt-bosom and capable of ready removal when soiled to expose a fresh and clean bosom.

Myinvention consists in certain novel features of the'oonstruction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the improved false bosom; whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in'the claims.

In the accompanying drawings,which serve to illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a false bosom constructed according to my invention in connection with a collar as it appears when worn. Fig. 2 is a face view showing the improved false bosom, a part of the upperor outer layer thereof being broken away to show another layer underlying. Fig; 3 is'a view similar to Fig. 2, butdrawn toa smaller scale and showing the'upper or outer layer of the false bosom folded over at its lower part to indicate the design upon the rear surface thereof. Fig. lis an enlarged sectional view taken through one of the eyelet-holes of the false bosom and showing the arrangement of the tape for securing the false bosom in position. Fig. 5 is a viewshowing a layer of the improved false bosom as it appears when torn from the tapes.

As shown in the drawings, the pad is formed of a .series of layersof material 1, preferably of paper or the like, having on their outer surface a pattern or design 2, printed, pressed, or otherwise formed in imitation of Serial No. 718,627. (No model.)

an ordinary shirt-bosom. The design 2 may be of anykind, being formed in colors when it is desired to give the appearance of a colored bosom. Some of the layers will, by preference, be left uncolored, so as to give an imitation of a white shirt-bosom, and, if desired, these maybe creased to represent the plaits ordinarily made in such bosom.

The layers 1 of the false bosom are formed at their upper parts with an inwardly-curved or concaved edge 3, designed to conform in a general manner to the curvature of the neckband of the shirt over which the false bosom is worn, and at opposite sides of said con caved edge are produced upwardly-extending portions 4 4, adapted to extend upon opposite sides of the neckband toward theshoulders of the wearer, said upwardly-extending portions 4 being formed with perforations or eyelets 5, punched or otherwise formed in them and serving for the passage of tapes 6, having buttons or enlargements 7 at their ends and of a length adapted to be conveniently passed around and tied behind the collar of the wearer.

X indicates a collar worn with the improved false bosom, which collar may be any..style, and 0c indicates the shirt-collar button worn at the front of the collar. Eachof the layers 1 of the false bosom is formed at the central part of its concaved edge 3 with a notch or recess 8, adapted to engage under the said collar-button m, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig.2, when the false bosom is in position, so as to act as a means to holdthefalse bosom against lateral movement when in position on the person.

The layers 1 of the improved. false bosom are made alike in size and shape and are by preference printed or otherwise formed with various designs 2 upon their faces, and, if desired, the back or under surfaces of the layers may also be formed or printed with designs, as indicated at 9 in Fig. 3, the upper or outer layer 1 of the false bosom insaid Fig. 3 being shown as turned or folded over at y in order to illustrate the pattern or design upon the rear surface thereof.

In use the false bosom is placed in position with its notch or recess 8 engaging the collar-button 0c of the shirt-neckband before the collar X is buttoned on, and the tapes 6 are carried back and tied at the back of the neckband. The collar X is then applied as shown in Fig. 1, its lower edges at its front part taking outside the concave edges 3 of the false bosom at each side of the notch 8, since said notch permits the edges of the false bosom to be drawn up closely around the neckband of the shirt beneath the collar. The tie is then applied in the ordinary manner, and when worn the improved false bosom presents a neat and clean appearance and is with difficulty distinguished from a nicelylaundered shirt-bosom, since its edges are hidden by the collar, tie, and vest.

If desired, it is possible to change the layers 1 in case the outer layer should become soiled without removing the false bosom from the person by merely grasping the free lower edge of said outer layer 1 and drawing it downward, so as to tear the tapes 6 through the eyelets 5 in said layer, as shown in Fig. 5. The soiled outer layer 1 being then removed leaves the clean layer immediately beneath exposed without any change whatever in the clothing. Also, if desired, the outer layer 1 may when soiled on its outer face be turned over by removing and again applying the tapes 6 through the eyelets 5, so as to expose its clean under surface 9 for wear and afford an additional economy in the use of the device.

The improved false bosom constructed according to my invention is extremely simple and inexpensive and being formed, by preference, from paper is light, cool, and of an extremely economical nature, effectinga material saving in laundry-bills. It will also be obvious from the above description that the device is capable of some modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts herein set forth.

I am aware that false bosoms for shirts have heretofore been devised by others, and

I claim, therefore, improvements in this art as follows:

1. As an article of manufacture, a false bosom for shirts comprising a layer of material formedin imitation of a shirt-bosom, and provided with a notch in its upper edge for engagement with the collar-button to hold the bosom against lateral displacement when in position, and tapes secured to said layer and adapted to be passed about the neck of the wearer, substantially as set forth.

2. As an article of manufacture, a false bosom for shirts comprisingaplurality of interchangeable reversible layers of material, means for detachably securing said layers of material together, and means for securing the bosom to the wearer, substantially as set forth.

3. As an article of manufacture a false bosom for shirts consisting of a plurality of layers of material each formed in imitation of a shirt-bosom and having a concave top edge adapted to conform to varying sizes of neckbands and having at the center of said top edge a notch whereby the layers may slide beneath the head of the collar-button and the walls of the notch bear against the
