UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKP. WILKIN, OF'SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
'STORE-GOODSLIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,200, dated February 11,1902.
Application filed July 6, 1 901.
the following is a description, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to that class of lifters for use in stores to handle shelf or suspended goods.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient store-goods lifter by means of which goods may be lifted from any elevated support and lowered, to provide the upper end of the lifter-polewith curvedjaws operative from a han'd-leveron the lower end of the pole and capable of grasping curved or cylindrical objects-such as jars, vases, cans, or the like-and to provide means, for properly adjusting the various elements of the lifter into proper relation-on the pole. These objects I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of my improved store=goods lifter with the grasping-jaws shown in perspective in their closed position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspectiveof the up-' per portion of the lifter.' Fig. 3 is a perspective of the hand-lever, and Fig. 4 is a plan of the hand-lever and the collar to which it is pivoted. V
Adesignates the pole, having the, usual re"- versely-curved hook at a on its upper end.
B B designate two crossed arms pivoted at; their point of crossing to the collar 1), secured in proper position on the pole by means of the set-screw b, the upper ends of these arms being provided with outwardly-projecting curved jaws B B, capable of grasping a 057-. lindrical or like object between them. an apertured'ear ciprojectingoutwardlyfrom a collar 0, secured on the pole by a set-screw o, and the lower end of the rod is secured to an ape rtured ear d, projecting outwardly from the upper'end of the operating-lever D. This lever D is provided with arms cl cl, which straddle the pole and are pivoted at their free apertnred ends to the ears d projecting from the collar (1 The collar (1 is clamped on the pole by means of the bolt d, while the lever E is the spring surrounding the rod 0 between the ear 0 and the lower ends of the links 13 B and by expansion forces jaws B open or apart, as shown in Fig. 2.
When it is desired to grasp an object, the open jaws are passed around it, and'then the operator forces lever D toward the pole by then pull down on the rod, and the rod in turn will pull down on the links, which with the levers B B constitute a toggle-lever, and so the jaws will be brought into the position shown in Fig. 1. c
It will be seen that the variousparts may be properly positioned on the pole by means of the three adjustable collars b 0 (:2
Having thus described my invention, what Patent, is-
1. A store-goods lifter, comprising a pole having upper, lower, and intermediate collars, the latter having an apertured lug or ear,
ing to the upper collar, and provided at their upper ends with grasping-jaws, an operatingrod passed through said apertured ear, links lower ends of said crossed levers, a spring on the rod between said apertured ear and links to force the rod upwardly and hold the jaws rod; substantially as described.
2. A store-goods lifter, comprising a pole, levers mounted on the upper portion of the Dis pivoted to the said cars 61 by the outer b'oltor pin (1 connecting the upper end of the rod withthe open, and a hand-lever pivoted to the lowercollar and connected to the lower end of the tightening his grasp, and the lng'or ear d will I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters crossed levers pivoted at their point of crosspole, andprovided with graspir'ig-jaws, an opcrating-rod operatively connected atits upper to the lower end of the rod; substantially as end to said jaws, a collar mounted on the described. 7 1'0 lower end of the pole, and provided with a In testimony whereof I ai'fix my signature lug or ear on its side opposite to the said in presence of two witnesses.
grasping-jaws, a hand-lever provided with F. P. WILKIN. arms straddling the pole and pivoted to the Witnesses:
said lug or ear, the said lever being provided A. B. FARLEY,
on its upper end with a lug or ear connected THEO. J. STRINGER.
