UNITED STATES ATENT GFFICE.
GUSTAVE W. TREICIIEL, OF CHESTNUT HILL, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFECATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 692,5 59, dated February 4, 1902.
Application filed April 23, 190l.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern/.-
Beitknown that I, GUsTAvE W. TREI0HEL, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Chest-- nut Hill, county of Philadelphia, and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new. and amusing Puzzle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and amusing puzzle; and it consists of three parts, one large part and two small ones, the smaller parts being connected to the larger part by a strin g or other flexible connection, and the object of the puzzle is to remove the two smaller parts and the string from the larger part, which can be done by proper manipulation.
With these ends in View this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specioally designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this-specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation yof the puzzle, showing the same in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a vperspective View showing the position the puzzle would be placed into separate the larger part from the smaller one, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section while it is in the same position as Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, Arepresents aflexible piece of leather or similar material, which may be of any desired configuration, but preferably heart shape.
B isa strip which is formed by making two slits longitudinally of the piece A, and thus the strip B will be joined to the body A at both ends. Directly below the strip B a hole C is formed through the body A.
D D are two flat pieces of sti materialsuch as metal, celluloid, or thelike-and they may be :made ofY any'desired conguration, but are also preferably made heart shape. These pieces D are secured to each end of the A string E.
Serial No. 57,061. (No model.)
The loop of this string passes through the hole C and then around the strip B, as shown in Fig. l, and the object ofthe puzzle is to separate the string to which the two pieces D are secured from the larger part A without cutting the strin g or untying any knots. To do this it is only necessary to make a loop of the strip B and force this loop through the hole C from the rear to the front, and after this loop C is through the hole the string can be pulled, so that the loop of the string will come within the loop of the strip B, as Ashown in Figs. 2 and 3, and then it is very easy to pull one of the smaller pieces D through the loop in the strip B, and thus re-v move the string from the body A.
This puzzle can be all stamped out, and
thus made very cheap, while at the same time making a very am using and entertaining toy.
vOf course I do not wish to he limited to the exact construction here shown,as slight modilications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- A puzzle consisting of three parts, one large part and two smaller parts, the large part to be made of flexible material, the smaller parts `to be made of stiffened material, two vertical slits out through the largerpart parallel with one another, these slits terminating before the edge of the part'cut through is reached so as to form a strip between the two slits, a 4
hole formed through the flexible piece directly beneath the strip, a string, the loop ofv which is adapted to pass through said hole from the front to the rear and then around the strip, the two stiened smaller parts adapted to be secured to each end of the string, substantially as'described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
v GUSTAVE W. TREICHEL.
