A hub 16 surrounds that portion of the journal lying outside the sect-ion 1, and is provided teeth of which engage with a toothed segmental plate 18, either secured to or formed as a part of the band 4. It will be further observed that where it is undesirable to utilize the cold-air openings, as would be. the case with some lines, a loosening of the thumbscrew 19 would permit the expanding spring 20 to force the hub outward, thus disengaging its teeth from those of the plate 18, whereby the latter and the band 4. will remain undisturbed, and may therefore be either oper ated by hand or remain inactive.
Mounted rotatably upon the stem 11 at opposite sides of the valve frame or ring 8 are the three'leavedregister-valves 21, each leaf of which is slightly greater than onehalf the area of each of the openings 9, so that when the said registers are rotated in opposite directions the leaves thereof comblue to either partially or wholly close the openings 5). it is the ordinary practice in this class of dampers to use but a single register, the leaves of which are slightly greater This arrangementhas been objected to, inasmuch in many instances it caused too great restriction of the draft. By the present arrangement, however, I am enabled to greatly increase the size of the openings 9, and thus commensurately increase. the draft. I deem this to be one of the important features of my invention, irrespective of the means new to be described for operating the registers.
The jdurnal 6 of the damper frame or ring is hollow or tubular, projects through and beyond the bearing-opening 5 in'the pipe-section 1, and has formed at its rear end an annular head or flange 23 designates a lever for operating or rotat ing the damper ring or frame 8, and the same is removably mounted on the tubular journal 6 in any suitable manner. In the present instance the said lever 23 is provided at its inner end with a hub or ring 2%, provided in turn with diametricallyopposite internal lugs or ribs 25, which latter engage with corresponding grooves 26, formed exleriorly in the tubular journal 0. The outer or free end of the lever 23 may be provided with a knob for operating the same.
The hub or ring 2i is of somewhatless width than the tubular bearing 6, and there fore the latter projects slightly beyond the former, and it in the present-instance extends through a central opening 27, formed in a dial-plate 28, secured fixedly in the present =instance to the section 1 by means of rivets 29. lhis dial-plate may be divided in any convenient manner, the degrees being indicated in the present instance by numerals ranging from 0. to 12, and at the 'top may appear the word Medium, while at the bottom at opposite sides of the zero-point may appear the words Open hand Closed.

which latter may be either formed integral with the shaft or secured thereto by any suitable means, and engaging the teeth of this gear at diametrically opposite sides are toothed segmental arms or rack-bars 35, one
of which extends from each of the register plates 21 and which are disposed in opposite directions. These segmental arms or rackbars may be maintained in operative engagement with the aforesaid gear by means of a guide or keeper 30, the same having a somewhat- U shape and being located on the shaft 30 between the flange 22 of the tubular jonr' nal 6, and the gear-wheel 34C.
It will be observed that, as before stated, the damper as a whole is rotated by means of the lever 23, and likewise will the cold-air openings be opened and closed by the same mechanism. The register, however, can be operated by means of the indicator 3l, which when moved over the dial rotates the rockshaft 30 and with it the gear-wheel 3%, thus causing the segmental rack-bars or arms 35 to travel in reverse directions and moving the ICO leaves of the opposing register plates toward or away from each other, thereby, opening or closing either partially or wholly the openings 0 of the damper.
