Be it known that I, J AMEs L. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illin0is,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seams for Sewed Articles, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to animprovement in seams for sewed articles, the object of the same being to provide a lapped seam for garments in which the raw edge of the lower fabric is bound by suitable binding, the upper fabric having a hem fold, a row of stitches passing down through the upper fabric, its fold, and the lower fabric, and another row passing through the upper fabric, both edges of the binding, and the lower fabric, thus making a strong, durable, and ornamental seam; and the invention consists, primarily, in a seam for sewed articles comprising upper and lower lapped fabrics, one having an inwardly-turned hem fold and the other having a binding-strip folded around its edge, one edge of the binding-strip facing the inner edge of the hem fold, with means for securing the parts together; and the invention also consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.

Preferably the seam is made upon a twoline sewing-machine of any well-known type, provided with a special construction of folding-guide, such as forms the subject-matter of an application filed by me of even date herewith, Serial No. 49,722, the upper fabric being folded, the raw edge of the lower piece bound, and the. binding-pieces folded at the edges, and the parts being united, all in one' continuous operation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The herein-described seam for sewed articles, comprising upper and lower lapped fabrics, one having an inwardlyeturned hem fold and the other having a binding-strip folded around its edge, one edge of the binding-strip facing the inner edge of the hem fold, and means for securing the parts together; substantially as described.

2.
