Figure 1 is a side view of my improved corn-planter with the pressure-foot raised. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, showing said pressure-foot down, making an impression in the ground. Fig. 3 is a detail end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a top plan of said planter. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the marking device. This invention relates to certain improve ments in corn-planters; and it consists in the construction of the seed-dropper and marking device; and the object of my invention is to produce a seed-dropper and marking mechanism by which the ground can be marked and the corn automatically dropped without the use of the chain and reel now in use.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a corn-planter frame. 2 represents the axle of said corn planter. 3 represents a double lever-arm, with a toggle-joint 19. 4 represents a casing for the pressure-foot 5. 6 represents a coil-spring with one end secured to said double lever 3 at 22 and the other end to the frame 1. 7 represents a rod with one end secured to said double lever 3 at 21 and at the other end to the arm 9 at 8. Said arm 9 is keyed to the corn.- dropper shaft 10. 11 represents a sprocket-wheel which is sleeved on the axle 2. 12 represents a ratchet for connecting said wheel 11 to the axle 2. 13 represents a lever for throwing said ratchet 12 in and out of gear. Said lever is secured to the portion of the frame 1 which is sleeved on the axle 2. 15 represents a sprocket-chain connecting said sprocket-wheel 11 with said sprocket-wheel 16. Said sprocket-wheel 16 is journaled on the axle 17, which is secured to tion shown in Fig. 2.
the frame 1. 18 represents the upper arm of said double lever 3, which is journaled to the lower arm 20 at 19. 21 and 22 represent the toggle-joint 19, in which are secured one end of the coil-spring 6 and one end of the rod 7. 23 represents lugs secured to the inside of pressure-foot 4, to which is journaled at 24 the lower end of said lever 20. 25, represents an arm which is keyed to said shaft 10. Said arm isprovided with the forked end 26. 27 represents a link of the chain 15, which is provided with the lugs 28. Said links are placed in said chain at theproper distance apart to actuate the-lever 25'to drop the corn at the proper distance apart.
This corn-dropper and marker is operated in the following manner: As the planter is moving forward the sprocket-wheel ll,which is sleeved on the axle 2, will rotate, and the sprocket-chain 15, having the links 27, which are provided with the lugs 28, will come in contact with the forked end 26 of the lever 25, which lever is keyed to the shaft 10. As said lugs 28 are engaging said lever 25 they will force said leverover, as shown in Fig. 2, which will in turn oscillate the shaft 10. As said shaft 10 oscillates, the corn will be dropped from the corn-boxes in the usual manner. The lever 9 is keyed to said shaft 10, and as said shaft 10 is oscillated it will also carry said lever 9 forward to the posi- The rod 7 is secured at one end to said lever 9 at 8. When said lever 9 is carried forward, it will, through the medium of the rod 7, oscillate the double lever 3, as shown in Fig. 2, thus forcing the impression-foot down' into the ground and marking the place where the corn is dropped. Said marker is just inside the right main wheel, as shown in Fig. 3.
If by passing over uneven ground the marker should not mark the ground at the right place to be in line with the rows previously marked, the lever 13 is thrown over,
thus throwing the ratchet 12 out of mesh, which will allow the sprocket-wheel 11 to r0- tate on said axle 2. The driver can then grasp the chain 15 and move it forward or backward to drop the corn in the proper place and make the impression with the pressurefoot in line with the rows of corn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. In the herein-described corn-planter the combination of a sprocket-wheel sleeved on the axle 2, an idler sprocket-wheel journaled to the forward portion of the frame of said planter, a sprocket-chain connecting said sprocket-Wheels, said chain having links with lugs on each edge, a forked lever keyed to the shaft 10 adapted to engage said lugs, a double lever with one end sleeved on said axle 2, a pressure-foot secured to the lower end of said double lever, a rod with one end secured to said double lever, an arm keyed to said shaft 10 to which is secured the other end of said rod, and a coil-spring secured at one end to the planter-frame 1 and the other end secured to-said double lever.
2. In the herein-described corn-planter an automatic marking device consisting of a pressure-foot having a double lever for operating said pressure-foot, said double lever sleeved on the axle near one end inside the .Wheel, a sprocket-wheel sleeved on the axle,-
keyed tosaid shaft 10, a rod connecting said arm and double lever, and a spring secured at one end to said double lever and the other end secured to said frame.
3. In the herein-described corn-planter, a corn-dropper device consisting of a sprocketwheel sleeved on the axle, an idler-wheel journaled to the planter-frame, a sprocketchain connecting said sprocket-wheels, levers keyed to the shaft 10 adapted to be actuated by said sprocket-chain, a pressure foot, a double lever with one end sleeved on said axle, and the other end journaled to said pressurefoot, a rod with one end secured to said double lever, a forked lever keyed to said shaft 10 towhich "is secured the other end of said rod, and a coil-spring secured at one end to said planter-frame, and the other end secured to said double lever.
4. In the herein-described corn-planter a marking device consisting of a pressure-foot adapted to work vertically in a casing which is secured to the frame of the corn-planter, a double lever, with one end secured to said pressure-foot, and the other end sleeved on the axle, a sprocket-wheel sleeved on the axle 2, an idler sprocket-wheel journaled to the forward end of the planter frame, a
sprocket-chain, having links with lugs on either edge thereof connecting said sprocketwheels, a forked lever keyed to the shaft 10 adapted to engage said logs on said chain, an arm keyed to said shaft 10, a rod connecting said arm and double lever and a spring secured to said double lever and planterframe. v
