Be it known that I, WILLIAM WILLIAi1s,a citizen of the United States,residing at Teller, in the county of Mineral, State of- Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Dinner-Pail and Lantern; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. j

This invention relates to combined dinnerpails and lanterns; and it has for its object to provide a pail having at one side'a lantern consisting of a top, bottom, and side portions hinged to the side of the bucket, so as to fold and lie flat against the bucket when the lantern is not in use and to be unfolded to form a rectangular inclosure having a transparent door and adapted to receive a candle.

Further objects and advantages of the invention Will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the dinner-pail with the lantern in its opera tive position. Fig.2 is a perspective view showing the lantern in folded position. Fig. 3 is a Vertical. section taken through the lantern and showing the means for holding the top, bottom, and sides of the lantern in their set-up positions. Fig. 4: is a top plan view showing the parts in folded positions.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a pail, including a body 5, having upwardly-directed ears 6 at its sides and with which are removably engaged the hooked ends of a carrying-bail 7.

The lantern comprises a bottom 8, comprising a major member 9 and a minor member 10, hinged thereto, and which latter member is in turn hinged to the side of the pail, the minor member being of such dimensions as to reach to the bottom of the pail and permit the major member to fold against the bottom of the pail. The sides of the lantern consist also each of two members 10 and 11, the minor member 10 being hinged to the side face of the pail, so that it may be moved to lie flat thereagainst, at which time the major mem= ber may be folded around the corner of the pail to lie flat against a second face thereof. To the free edge of the major member of one side of the lantern is hinged a door-frame 12, in which is a light 13, of mica or other suitable material. The top of the lantern consists of a major section lat and a minor section 15,hinged thereto,the latter beinghinged to the face of the pail and extending so that when moved to lie fiat thereagainst the major section may be moved to lie upon the top of the pail, the major section having a slot 16 therein to receive an ear of the pail to hold the section in folded position. When the top is to be engaged with the ear, the bail is of course first removed and is then reengaged.

The sides, top, and bottom of the lantern are made of tin or other suitable sheet metal, and to hold the edges thereof in mutual en gagement when the lantern is set up-the side edges of the top are bent downwardly, as shown at 16, and the upper edges of the sides have inwardlydirected grooved beads 17, formed by bending the metal inwardly and downwardly and then upwardly, the downturned edges of the top engagingin the grooves of the beads when the lantern is set up. The lower edges of the sides are bent inwardly and upwardly into hook form, as shown at 18, to

receive the downturned side edges of the bottom. (Shown at 19.) The door-frame is provided with a latch 20 for engagement with a keeper 21 upon the corresponding side of the lantern.

In the bottom of the lantern is an opening 22, at the edge of which are struck-up fingers 23 to receive a candle, which may be passed upwardly through the opening, thus permitting of the use of a long candle and of adjusting it to compensate for burning.

When the parts of the lantern are folded against the pail, the latch of the door-frame is engaged behind a keeper on the pail to hold the frame, and therewith the side of the lantern, against the pail, while the bottom and the opposite side are held in folded positions by the U-shaped wires 25 and 26, the ends of which are pivoted to the top and bottom of the pail to permit of movement into engagement with the bottom and side of the lantern, as shown.

In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made, and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is- 1. The combination with a dinner-pail, of a lantern including a bottom, top and sides hinged to the pail, a door hinged to one of the sides, the bottom being adapted to receive a candle, and a common carrying-bail attached to the pail.

2. The combination with a dinner-pail, of

r a lantern comprising a top, bottom and sides hinged to the pail, the back of the lantern being formed by the pail, a transparent door hinged to one of the sides, and a common carrying-bail pivoted to the pail.

3. The combination with a dinner-pail, of a lantern comprising a bottom, top and sides hinged to the pail and adapted to fold to lie there'against, and means carried by the pail for holding the parts of the lantern in their folded positions.

4. The combination with a dinner-pail, of a top, bottom and sides hinged to fold against the pail, one of the sides being provided with a hinge-door, and a U-shaped wire pivoted to the pail and adapted for movement to lie over the parts of the lantern to hold them in folded positions.

5. The combination with a dinner-pail, of a lantern comprising a top, bottom and sides hinged thereto, the sides having upwardlydirected flanges at their upper and lower edges, and the top and bottom having downwardly-directed flanges at their side edges for
