MANALCUS G. KEERAN, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
COM PGSETE CAR=Viil-lEEL SPEGIFZOA'EIOH part of Letters Patent No. 690,967, dated January 14, 1902.
Application filed April 24,1901.
T0 aZZ whom it ntay concern:
Be itknown that I, MANALcUs G. KEERAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composite Oar-Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a composite car-wheel of wood and metal that will be comparatively noiseless, possess the required strength and durability, and superior in many respects to the ordinary metal car-wheel.
The invention consists in a car-wheel constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a car-wheel constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view thereof; Fig. 3, a sectional view of a modification of the wheel.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the inside flanged metal plate of the car-wheel of the usual construction and provided with the solid metal hub B. Upon the hub B are the two wood sections 0 D, and interposed between these wood sections is a metal disk E, and upon the outer side of the wood section I) is the metal disk F. These wood sections and metal disks are connected together and to the flanged metal plate A by means of suitable bolts H, extending through the same, thereby admitting of the wood sections and metal disks being removed when required to repair the wheel or for any other purpose. The wood sections are to deaden the noise incident to the tread of the wheel coming in contact with the metal rail, and the metal disks are to give the required strength and durability to the wheel and serve to hold the wood sections in place.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings I have shown a modification in that a single wood section is used in place of the two wood sections, as indicated at G.
I do not wish to be confined to any particular means of securing the wood sections and metal disks together and to the wheel or flanged plate thereof, as any suitable and Serial No. 57,244. (No model.)
well-known means may be substituted for that shown.
In the wood sections it is preferred that the wood be boiled in oil to prevent the sections taking dampness and increase the durability thereof.
The flanged plate A and hub B are formed integral, as shown, whereby the wheel is materially strengthened, the metal disks E F serving as clamping-disks to hold the wood sections in place, said disks and wood sections being removably connected to the flanged plate, as hereinbefore described.
It is deemed important that the hub and axle B be solid and integral with the flanged plate A, as by this construction I obtain a wheel possessing greater strength than when the hub is tubular and the axle passes therethrough, and the disks will not be affected by expansion and contraction nor disturbed from their relative positions by the vibrations, as is apt to be the case where the hub is hollow. Furthermore, by this construction the disks maybe readily removed and replaced by others without removing the wheel, which is a great desideratum in car-wheels.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A composite car wheel comprising a flanged plate having a solid metal hub integral therewith, and wood and metal sections which form the tread of the wheel, said sections extending to the hub and abutting against the periphery thereof, and suitable means for holding the sections together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A composite car-wheel consisting of an integral solid hub, axle and flanged plate with the hub projecting beyond the plate outward, and a composite tread of disks sleeved upon the projecting portion of the hub, a metal clamping-disk on the outside of said disks, and means for detachably holding said .parts together whereby the disks may be removed without removal of the wheel, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
