e it known that I, ALnERT MARCELLUS, ot' Pittsford, in the county of Monroe, and State of Newf'York, have invented certain new anduset'nl Improvements in Potato-Diggers and I do hereby declare that the following is n.` `ull,c`lear, and exact description thereof, reference' being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whichfi Y Figure 1 is a side elevation, having the. right-hand mould-board B and shaker Gr removed, as is also the rightfhand sido ot' the frame, and a portion of the driving-gear C. i l
Figure 2 is n top view of the plough and the shakers. V
FigureS is a top view of the detachable point f1, and a portion of the upright S, to which it is keyed.
-Figure 4 is a'transverse vertical section in the plane of the red line g, figs. .1 and 2.
Likeflettcrs indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. Thev ground-wheels are only represented by dotted lines W, in iig. 1.
vThis invention relates to improvements upon my former patentof Februaryg, 1866, and itrcnsists, mainly, in an improved construction of the plough, in hanging the shakers' to rthe wings of the mould-boards, and in providing suitable' means for vibratingl or shaking them; also in the rnannerrof raising and loweringrthe plough.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe itsleonstruction and operation. I carry this machine upon the same style of ground '..l cls aslthose patented tome in 1866. I now attach each wheel rigidly to a short shaft, hung in suitable boxes to theunder side of Athe frame. Upon one shaft, A, y p
I hang loosely the spur or driving-'gear7 which is driven, when desired, by the sliding-clutch g, which isoperated bythe hand-lever D, and is held in or out of gear by placing the pin b one side ,or-thc other of the lever.l The'crank-shaft s` is driven by the connecting gearing from the ground-wheel shaft A, and it operates 0 1' vbrates vertically the shakers G and G. lThe ground-wheels may be attached loosely to one long shaft, if desired, andeither or both provided with a suitable ratchet. The stock E, supporting `the upright S, is made with a. long bearing in the rear and on the lower side of the frame, and 'forward, above-it. I provide a friction-roller,r, in lthe upper side, against which the front edge of the upright S rests. The rear c 'dge ishtoothed, as shown, and
the `lever 'l has a 'toothed segmental head, H, which engages the upright S. The spring-bolt also engages the i teeth of the upright.` This ratchet is withdrawn, when any change is to be made in the gauge ofthe plough,`
by means of the hand-leverf, and it is thrown into and retained in gear by the spiral spring R. The lower end of the upright S is shapedns shown in fig. 1,jand is cast with a mortisc togreceive the lu'g m, cast upon the left wing wandwvhich rcache'sithrough upon the right wing, as shown in ig.,2, and there is a similar projection. x from the edge of wing w, running under thelug m; or the lugsmay be divided, one half being cast upon each Wing, one part in front and the other in' the rear. The wings are provided with ears y, g. 1, through which they are bolted to the upright S, and also with a; `flange, c, at the outer` edgeto which the mould-board plates B and B are bolted. The lug m and projection from wing w are notched, `as shown at a, fig. 2, and after being. inserted the wings are. moved back, :is shown, and .a wooden key driven-'through in` front at c, which securely locks them to the upright. Therc'may be angle or brace-irons cast to'l the, upper si'de of the wings w and w,.or.
to the sides ot' the upright S, for the support of the wings, The plates Band B are provided with suitable' ears, e, to hinge the shakers to, as Vseen` indgs. 1-and 2. The latter -rcccivc `avertical vibration or shake by means of the double rod It', iig. 1. The nose-plate P is rounded ove-' the edge of the upright S, and the ends ,overlap the mould-boards B andB, and are attached to thomby screw-bolts.` .Itis rmlyheldiin its position vertically between the notches @and z, fig. 1. The pointp is made tol fit tlc xiotchcsn and t, which are doveby dotted linesin ligl 1, which clasp thc sides of the upright. It is'sciilrelyheld in position by simply driving in key, z'. -The main object in making this point detachable is, th'at'when it becomes uselessl by being worn andfdull, it may be readily detached'andal new one substitut-ed.4 Thepointlwhere the wear comes is cast upon :r-chillcrt The mould-boards extend ncarlyto the edge ofthe ground-wheels.
I aui"g'i`:nvin'ceg rlj,'by a great variety of oft-repeated.r experiments, that the only really practical way-todig potatoes rrmehinenyv is the plan adopted in this machine, viz, to part the hill in the centre, and force it each 'way intothe ground-wheels, frcmwliich thepotatoes and othercoarse substances that will not pass through the i e, shown in figgnndvalso represented wheels yare dischargedupon the shakers, where the separation is perfected, and the potatoes deposited in a central row upon the surface of the ground,- or upon an elevating-belt, if desired. I have also-ascertained, by actual experiment, that when the nose-plate P is rounded in front, and in a vertical' position, or nearly so, as shown at 7L, iig. 2, it is impossible to clog the plough with u'ecds, vines, or similar substances, because they are easily drawn one way or the other across the rounded vertical nose-plate. There may be a sheet-iron guard, a few inches wide, attached to the nose-platc 1)andl extended back to the front edge of the shakers, to prevent the lodgnient or depositof earth, Bte., on the Wings. The upright S projects ydownwardbelow the lo'wer edge ot' the mould-boards to act as. a lateral guide or steady for the inachine, which is found to be very essential in the Working of this machine.
What Irelaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. The arrangement of the nose-plate P, witlrits dividing line vertical or nearly so, and rounded, substantially in the manner and for 4the purposes herein shown and described.
2. The arrangement ofthe wings w and w, in combination with the upright S, to which they arerconuectcd suitably, as and for the purposes herein specified.
3. The detachable mould-boards B and B', in combination with the nose-plate P, and the-wings w and w', when the said mould-boards are arranged with their faces or ilat sides vertical, or nearly so, as shown.
4. Hinging the shakers Grand Gr to the mould-boards, substantially as described, and vibrating them-ver- I tically, for the purposes set forth.
5. The arrangement of the toothed upright and toothed headed lever T, with the friction-roller 1', ratchet. d, and lits lever f, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose of gauging and adjusting the elevation of the plough.
6. The detachable point ZJ, constructed and connected substantially in the manner and for thc-purposes herein shown and described.
