UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH P. KELLY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,958, dated May 13, 1902.
Application led November 5,1901. Serial No. 81,206. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. KELLY, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Adjustable Casters, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and'eXact description, reference being had to f thefaccompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to an adjustable caster; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts hereinafterV shown, described, and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable caster by means of which tables, chairs, and the like maybe made to rest securely and evenly upon uneven floors and surfaces.
My invention consists of an interiorlyscrew-threaded thimble adapted to be inserted into the legs of the chair or table, a bearing at the upper end of said thimble for the caster-rod, a nipple adjustably screwseated in said thimble and having a bearing for the lower end of the caster-rod, a caster, a bracket attached to the caster, and a rod extending upwardly from the bracket into said bearings, said caster being adjusted up and down by the operation of said nipple.
oFigures 1 and 2 are sectional views of a portion of a table-leg, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the adjustable nipple which regulates the distances of the caster from the end of the table-leg.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the thimble l is interiorly screw-threaded at its lower end, and a bearing 2 is formed at its The exteriorlyfscrew-threaded upper end.
nipple 3 is adjustably screw-seated in the lower end of the thimble l, and said nipple forms a bearing for the lower end ofthe oaster-rod. The caster is mounted in a bracket 4, and the rod 5 extends upwardly from the bracket 4, through the bearing` in the nipple 3, and into the bearing 2. The distance between the lower end of fthe table-leg and the bracket 4 is adjusted by screwing the nipple 3 in the thimble. The bearing 2 is of great importance, as it supports the upper end of the rod 5 and saves the nipple 3 from the great strain whichwould otherwise fall upon it.
If found desirable, a shoulder or uneven portion may be formed on the nipple 3, near its lower end, to receive a wrench or other appliance, whereby the nipple can be turned to adjust it properly as required to support the table or chair.
I claim-"2 An adjustable caster comprising a tubular casting having the interiorly-screw-threaded lower portion 1,* and a smaller upper portion 2; the nipple 3 adjustably screw-seated in said larger portion l; the caster having the bracket 4 to engage the lower 'end of the nipple 3 and the vertical rod 5 extending throughv the nipple 3 into the smaller upper portion 2 of the casting, said upper portion 2 serving as a bearingto support the upper end of the rod 5, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in Vpresence of two witnesses,
, JOSEPH P. KELLY. Witnesses:
ALFRED A. EIoKs, JOHN D. RIPPEY.
