E. LUDDE. WAXER FOR SAD IRONS.
(Application filed Mar. 16, 1901.) I
(No Model.)
IN vavrom ATTORNEYS UNIED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELARD LUDDE, OF MASPETH, NEXV YORK.
WAXER FOR SAD-IRONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,886, dated May 13, 1902.
' Application filed March 16, 1901. Serial No. 51,457. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELARD LUDDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maspeth, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in YVaxers for Sad-Iron s, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a convenient device for applying wax to the face of sad-irons in ironing shirt-bosoms, collars, cuffs, &c., said waxing device being so arranged that all the wax in the same is used up and without burning the fingers in handling it; and the invention consists of a waxer for sad irons which comprises an exterior shell, a block of wax under constant pressure contained in said shell, a helical spring interposed between the head of the shell and the wax, a retaining-piece of suitable porous material extending over the open end of the shell and the wax, and a cap adapted to be placed over the outer end of the wax when the same is not required for use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is.
a perspective View of my improved waxing device for sad-irons with the cap removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same; and Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on line 3 3, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a hollow shell of any suitable shape made of wood or other suitable material and providedwith a handle a at its upper end. In the ML low portion or cavity of the same is located a piece of wax B, corresponding in shape to the cavity, and between the inner end of the piece of wax B and the inner end of the cavity is located a helical spring (J, which serves for forcing the wax in outward direction through the open end of the shell. Across the open taining-piece is placed against the under side of the hot sad-iron, so that the wax melts and passes through the meshes of the fabric onto the face of the iron, so as to supply the required quantity of wax for ironing. This is assisted by the recesses d at the circumference of the retaining-piece. When the wax is not required for use, the cap E is placed over the open end of the shell, so that the face of the wax and the retaining-piece are protected against dust or other dirt.
By my improved waxing device the wax can be applied in a very convenient manner without injury to or soiling of the fingers and is always applied to the face of the sad-iron in a perfectly neat and clean manner, so as not to smudge the cloths that are ironed. As there isno loss of wax, even the smallest remnant being used up, the deviceis avery economical one and forms a very desirable article for household and laundry use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A waxing device for sad-irons, consisting of a shell provided with a handle at one end, a piece of wax under constant pressure in said shell, a helical spring interposed between the innerend'of the wax and the shell, and a retaining-piece of textile fabric attached to the shell and extending over the open end of the same and the wax, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELARD LUDDE.
Witnesses: I
