JOHANN AUGUST FRIEDRICH CARL SEUMENIGHT, OF LAGERDORF, GERMANY.
SHAFT-FURNACE FOR BURNING CEMENT, 84.0.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 699,852, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed July 27,1900. Serial No. 25.021. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, J OHANN AUGUST FRIED- RICH CARL Snunumcnna subject of theDuke of Brunswick, residing at Lagerdorf, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Furnaces for Burning Cement and the Like, (for which I have applied fora patent in Germany, dated July at, 1809,) of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to that class of shaft-furnaces for burning cement and the like in which the raw material is dried in a drying-chamber heated by the waste heat of the furnace.
In this new furnace a preliminary-heating chamber is provided, in which the raw material after having been dried in the dryingchamber is heated before being introduced into the combustion or smelting chamber.
The invention consists, essentially, in the arrangement at the height of the feed-opening in the preliminary-heating chamber of a drying chamber inside another chamber, which is situated above the main combustion or smelting chamber and beside the preliminary-heating chamber, so that the Walls of the drying-chamber are protected as far as possible from the action of the external air.
In the accompanying drawing a Vertical sec tion of a furnace constructed in accordance with this invention is represented.
The shaft-furnace consists of seven compartmentsviz., A, the combustion chamber; B, the preliminary-heating chamber; F, an intermediate chamber connecting through chamber E the preliminary-heating chamber B with T, the drying-chamber, and D the flue connected with chamber T through chamber G.
The combustion or smelting chamber A is connected by the channel H to the preliminary-heating chamber 13. In a line with the preliminary-heating chamber, but separated therefrom by the arch or partition 0, the line D of the furnace is situated. At the top of the heating-chamber an openingis provided in the side WV, so that the gases issuing from the preliminary-heating chamber can pass into the chamber E, thence downwardly into chamber F underneath thedrying-chamber.
Openings of a suitable size connect chamber F with the drying-chamber T, which contains the fresh material to be dried on carriages or other suitable supports. In the top of this dryingchamber T there are a number of openings through which the gases escape into the chamber G and from thence pass into the flue D above the arch or partition C. The drying-chamber is situated at the height of the charge-opening of the furnace in an otherwise dead space, and as it is arranged beside the preliminary-heating chamber, the gases being drawn down through the chamber E into chamber F, it is exposed to the hot gases issuing from the preliminary-heating chamber. The technical advantage of this arrangement is that the gases issuing from the combustion or smelting chamber are not conducted directly into the drying-chamber, as in existin g constructions, whereby, in the first place, the raw material is exposed to too excessive heat, and, in the second place, the gases escaping into the flue still possess such a high temperaturethat an economical combustion of the fuel is quite out of question, but after leaving the combustion-chamber first pass into the preliminary-heating chamber, where they still burn, and then through intermediate protecting-chambers into the drying-chamber at a considerably lower temperature. With this arrangement the carriages or other supports containing the raw material are not liable to being burned, and the gases of combustion are utilized as far as possible before escaping into the flue.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, is-
In combination in a furnace, a drying-chamber, heating and protecting chambers above and. below said drying-chamber and opening thereinto, a combustion-chamber, a preliminary heating chamber into which the hot gases from the combustion-chamber pass, and a heating and protecting chamber lying back of the drying-chamber and connecting the preliminary-heating chamber withthe chamber below the dryingchamber, the gasespassing therethrough in a downward direction, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JOIIANN AUGUST FRIEDRICH CARL SEUMENICHT.
