Nrrnn STATES THOMAS R. AUSTIN, OF COLEMAN, TEXAS.
TYPE-WRITER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed February 3, 1902.
To all whom, it may concern.- 1
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. AUSTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coleman, in the county of Coleman and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Writers, of'which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to type-writers; and the object of the same is to construct a device which will do away with thepresent platenable all shifting from lower case to upper case to be done by means of the one set of keys ordinarily employed, but of modified construction.
The simple and novel construction employed by me in carrying out my inventionis fully described in this specification and, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which' Figure 1 is a perspective of a portion of a type-Writer with my improvements thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail of one key and its corresponding key-bars. Fig. 3 is a detail per-. spective of onekey. Fig. 4is a detail section of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail plan of the same. Fig. 6 is a detail plan of the slide of one key. Fig. 7 is a section of a key on the line 7 7, Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a modified form of slide having a checkered surface to prevent the slipping of the fingers.
Like numerals of reference designate like The numeral 1 designates the frame of a type-Writer having a keyboard 2. The keys 3 of the keyboard 2 are arranged in parallel rows in the usual manner. The detailed structure of the keys 3 is novel and Will be described in detail. Each of the keys 3 comprises an angular body 4, a revoluble shank 5, bearing a foot 5 and a pinion 6, and a head 6, bearing a sliding plate 7, carrying a rack 8, meshing with the pinion 6. The angular body 4 is slidingly mounted in an apertured bar 4; and is adapted to be depressed by the fingers to operate the key levers. There are two sets of key-levers the members of which alternate and are arranged side by side. The members of one series are designated 9 and operate type-bars for the lowercase letters, While the members of the second Patent NO. 699,473, (littd. May 6, 1902.
Serial No. 92,456. (N0 model.)
series are designated 10 and serve to operate type-bars 12, bearing upper-case type. The members of the series 9 and 10 are arranged in pairs bearing corresponding letters, there being one pair for each of the keys 3. The
feet 5 are set to'normally engage the key plate 14. serves to hold the shanks against Wabbling." Screws 15,fittin g slots 16 in flanges 114 serveas stops to limit the movement of p the plates'7j r In operation the keys 3 are operated by the 'fingersin the usual manner to print the lowercase-letters, when the feet 5 will engage the key-bars 9 and operate them to actuate the type-bars 10. When it is desired to print an upper-case letter, theoperator places his finger on the correspondin g lower-case key 3 and pulls to him or pushes the plate 7 from him, accbrding to construction. This action will operate the rack-bar 8 to rotate the pinion 6 to turn the shank 5 through one-half a revolution and bring-the foot '5 into position to engage the keysbars 10. Assoo'n as the plate 7 is brought-toastandstill by the stop '15 thereon the operatorpresses down on the key,- prints the letter,'andthenreleases it. When the key is released, the spring 13 will return the plate 7 to its initial position.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified inmeans for rotating said pinion to bring said foot into engagement with the other of said key-bars, substantially as described.
2. In a type-Writer, a pair of pivoted keybars, a Slidingly-monnted key bearing a rotatable shank having a foot engaging one of said key-bars, a sliding plate carried by said key, and means operated by the sliding of said plate to rotate said shank to bring said foot into engagement with the other of said keybars, substantially as described.
3. In a type-Writer, a pair of pivoted keybars, a slidingly-mounted key bearing a rotatable shank having a foot engaging one of said key-bars, a sliding plate carried by the head of said key, means operated by the sliding of said plate to rotate said shank to bring said foot into engagement with the other of said key-bars, and a spring arranged to oper- I THOMAS R.
