f Ntra CHARLES B. BALDWIN, OF
To @ZZ whom it may concerm Be itknown that I, CHARLES B. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention relates to boxes, and has particular reference to that class of boxes intended to contain phonograph or graphophone record-cylinders. Because of the composition of which such record-cylinders are made great care has to be exercised in their handling and shipping in order to prevent damage or breakage to the same; and it has been the object of my invention to provide a box of cheap and simple construction in which such recordcylinders may be safely contained and supported when not in use or when being transported without liability of damage or breakage.
The invention will be hereinafter described in detail, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring 1.o the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section through a box embodying my invention with `a recordcylinder contained therein. Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section through line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a portion of the under side of the box-cover.
In said drawings, l indicates the body of my improved box, which is preferably formed of cardboard, although any other suitable material may be employed in :its construction. This box is preferably made circular in form, so as to conform to the shape of the recordcylinder which it is intended to contain, and is provided with a centrally-arranged tube 2, secured therein, over which the record-cylinder (indicated at 3) is adapted to fit when placed in the box, the space between the tube and the inner wall of the box being sufciently wide to prevent contact of the outer face of the record with the box. The tube 2, in accordance with my invention, is provided with an outer face of corrugated paper or similar material 8, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, and is secured in position by means of outwardly-turned portions 4 at its lower ond,

which are firmly glued or otherwise secured to the bottom of the box. These outwardlyturned portions or extensions 4 of the tube are formed by slitting the lower end of the latter at certain distances apart and then bending outwardly the parts between such slits, as shown. This method of attaching the tube to the box is both cheap and simple and at the same time insures the tube being firmly held in position.
A furtherand most important feature of the described construction of the tube 2 and its outwardly-turned extensions 4 is that the corrugated faceof the tube serves to form an elastic or yielding support to the record-cylinder as against any lateral movement of the same, while the upper corrugated faces of the extensions 4 afford an elastic oryielding bearing for the lower end of the record-cylinder to rest upon.
The cover of the box, which comprises the usual top plate 5 and outer rim or flange 6, is provided, in accordance with my invention, with a ring of corrugated paper or similar material 7 on its under side, which registers in position with the space between the tube and the outer wall of the box, so as to enter and fit therein when the cover is placed on the box and engage with the upper end of the record-cylinder. In this manner the recordcylinder will have a yielding or cushioned bearingsurface at its opposite ends. The said corrugated ring 7 on the under side of the cover in addition to providing a cushion for the upper end of the record-cylinder when placed in position also engages with the upper end of the tube 4 at its outer edge and retains the same in proper form.
Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box of the character described, comprising the box proper, a tube located within said box provided with-integral outwardlyprojecting extensions at its lower end secured to the bottom of the box, the said extensions being corrugated and presenting a yielding surface or cushion, and a cover for the box.
2. A box of the character described, comprising the box proper, a tube secured within said box to receive a record-cylinder thereover, a yielding cushion located in the bottom of the box around the lower end of said tube, and a cover having an annular cushion on its under side extending, When the cover is in position, around the upper end of the tube and engaging with its outer side, for the purpose set forth.
3. A box of the character described, comprising the box proper, a tube located centrally Within said box with an annular opening or space between the same and the inner wall of the box, a cushion of yielding material located in the bottom of the box around the lower end of said tube, and a cover having an annular cushion on its under side which registers with the said annular opening in the box and engages at one edge thereof With the side of the tube at its upper end, for the purpose set forth.
4. A box of the character described, coinprising the box proper, a tube located Within said box to receive a record-cylinder thereover and being provided With an outer face of corrugated paper or similar exible material for contact With the record-cylinder, the said tube being also provided With integral outwardly-projecting extensions at its lower hend secured to the bottom of the box and presenting an upper corrugated yielding surface for the loWer vend of the record-cylinder to rest upon, and a cover having an annular strip of corrugated paper or similar yielding material on its under side for engaging With the upper end of the record-cylinder.
5. A box of the character described, comprising the box proper, a tube secured Within said box, a yielding cushion located in the bottom of the box around the lower end of said tube, and a cover having an annular cushion on its under side extending, when the cover is in position, around the upper end of the tube.
