UNTTE STATES ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. HEMPY, OF BRIOE, OHIO.
BUCKLE-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,317, dated May 6, 1902. h
Application filed January 20, 1902. Serial No- 90,445. (No model To [LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. HEMPY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brice, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckle-Shields; and I do'dcclare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a buckle-shield.
The object of the invention is to provide a shield of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and which will effectually guard or shield the tongue of the buckle and at the same time not interfere with the engagement therewith of a strap.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the position the shield assumes in the act of engaging a strap with the tongue of the buckle, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the position of the parts after the strap has been engaged with the tongue of the buckle.
Referring -to the drawings, 1 denotes a buckle, which may be of any well-known or approved construction,in the preseutinstance consisting of the side pieces 2, the end pieces 3, the cross'piece 4, and the tongue 5, pivoted to the cross-piece.
6 denotes the shield, which is pivoted to the side pieces of the buckle near their forward ends and is angular and formed with guideflanges 7. Any suitable means may be employed for attaching the shield to the buckle as, for instance, a pintle may be inserted through the side pieces of the shield and through apertures 8, formed at the ends of.
the side pieces of the buckle.
WVhen in the position shown in Fig. 1, it will be noticed that the side pieces of the angularshield serve to guide the end of the strap in between the side pieces of the buckle in A front of the tongue thereof. After the strap has been inserted the proper distance and strain is applied to it the shield assumes the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position a straight pull upon the strap causes the forward end of the shield to be forced upward and the rear end to be forced downward into firm engagement with the strap, thus preventing rattling of the shield and also socurelyholdingitinits position overthetongue and effectually guarding the same.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj- The combination with a buckle having a pivoted tongue, of a shield angular in length and provided with downwardly-projecting angular side flanges which are pivoted intermediate their ends to the sides of the buckle frame at its front end and are adapted to guide the strap between the sides of the buckle-frame into position to be engaged with the tongue, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of. two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE L. HEM PY.
