CEMENTING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,962, dated April 29, 1902. Application filed March 28, 1901. Serial No. 53,159. (No model.)
a machine adapted to apply cement or paste to one of the surfaces of a boot or shoe solev or other piece of work without waste of cement and without liability of the machine being clogged by accumulations of fibrous matter removed from the work.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an end elevation of the principal parts of a cementing-machine embodying my invention, portions of the machine being shown in sections. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in both figures.
In the drawings, 7 represents the cement distributing and applying roll, which is journaled in bearings formed in a fixed frame 8, the axis of said roll being horizontal. The periphery of the roll 7 is provided with a series of cells or pockets 14 to enable the roll" to carry a sufficient quantity of cement and to apply a suitable coat to the surface of the article to be treated. Each of said pockets is independent of the others, each pocket being surrounded by a wall, said walls collectively constituting the periphery of the roll, which periphery presents a grated appearance.
15 represents a bed-rolhwhich is located below the applying-roll 7 and is preferably journaled in bearings which are movable toward and from the presenting roll, so that a sole 9 of any desired thickness can be inserted between the two rolls and pressed by the bed-roll 15 against the applying-r0117.
27 27 represent the ends of a cement-presenter, located at one side of the applyingroll 7, said end pieces being formed to bear upon the ends of the roll 7 and provided with suitable packings 28. The bottom of said cement-presenter has a plate or wiper 33,
riphery of the applying-roll 7 and is held in close rubbing or wiping contact with the latter by means hereinafter described, the said bottom piece or wiper 33 being located between the body of cement presented to the applying-roll 7 by the cement-presenter and the applying portion of the roll 7, said applying portion being the lowest portion of the roll extending along the line of nip of the two rolls. 33 are formed on or affixed to asupply-reservoir 102. In the inner wall of the reservoir is an outlet 103, normally closed by a valve 104:, attached to a rock-shaft 105, journaled in the wings 27 and provided with an arm 106, which maybe actuated bya spring 13 and treadle-rod 12. The outlet 103 is located below the upper portion of the presenter,-and the upper portion of the reservoir 102 is normally air-tight, so that when the accumulation of cement in the presenter rises above the outlet it will prevent further flow of cement to the presenter, thus preventing liability of the cement overfiowin g from the presenter. The valve 10% may therefore be held open continuouslywhile the machine is in operation, the operator allowing the valve to close just before the work is finished, so that the ce ment remaining in the presenter may be consumed and the presenter emptied by the time the work is finished. Provision is thus made for preventing exposure of the cement to the atmosphere when the machine is not in use. The top of the reservoir has a supply-opening provided with an air-tight cover or clo sure 107, which, as here shown, is pivoted to a lever 108, which in turn is pivoted to the top of the reservoir 109 and is held down against its seat by a swinging clamping-lever 110.

The said grated surface is thus kept clean or free from cement, so that the cement is applied to the sole 9 only by the pockets 14. By thus providing for a continuous wiping of the grated periphery of the applying-roll I prevent any accumulation of cement between said periphery and the sole. If cement were allowed to accumulate on the grated periphery of the roll, it would accumulate on the upper surface of the sole in the space just behind the nip of the rolls, and this accumulation would gradually increase, so that there would be a ridge or mass of cement at the rear end of the sole, which mass would be liable to drop from the sole and occasion waste and objectionable litter in the vicinity of the machine. The wiper 33, pressed continuously against the grated periphery of the applying-roll, obviates this objection. The stud 114 is provided with an adjusting-nut 115, which enables the pressure of the wiper against the applyingroll to be varied and also enables the wiper to be adjusted forward from time to time to compensate for wear.
The rolls 7 and 15 may be positively rotated by any suitable mechanism in the directions required to move forward the sole 9. The rolls may be connected by gearing having provisions for permitting various degrees of separation of the two rolls, as usual in machines of this character.
I claim- 1. A cementing-machine comprising a cement-applying roll having pockets in its periphery, a bed-roll which supports the work under the applying-roll, a cement-presenter adapted to hold a body of cement against one side of the applying-roll above its cement-applying portion, a wiper which bears against the periphery of the applying-rollbetween the body of cement and the said applying portion, and means for adjusting said wiper relatively to the periphery of the applying-roll.
2. A cementing-machine comprising a cement-applying roll having pockets in its periphery, a bed-roll which supports the work under the applying-roll, a cement-presenter having end portions bearing against the ends of the applying-roll, and a bottom portion or wiper extending along the periphery of the applying-roll and in wiping or rubbing contact therewith between the body of cement and the said applying portion.
3. A cementing-machine comprising a cement-applying roll having pockets in its periphery, a bed-roll which supports the work under the applying-roll and is pressed yieldingly toward the applying-roll, a cement-presenter having end portions bearing againstthe ends of the applyingmoll and a wiper bearing against the periphery of the applying-roll between the body of cement and the said applying portion, and means for adjusting said wiper relatively to the periphery of the applying-roll.
4. A cementing-machine comprising a cement-applying roll having pockets in its periphery, a bed-roll which supports the work under the applying-roll and is pressed yieldingly toward the applying-roll; a cement-presenter having end portions bearingagainst the ends of the applying-roll and a wiper bearing against the periphery of the applying-roll between the body of cement and the said applying portion, said presenter being pivoted above the said wiper, so that the latter is adapted to swing edgewise toward the applying-roll, and means for exerting pressure on said presenter in the direction required to press the said wiper against the periphery of the applying-roll.
5. A cementing-machine comprising a cement-applying roll having pockets in its periphery, a bed-roll which supports the work under the applying-roll and is pressed yieldingly toward the latter, a cement-presenter adapted to hold a body of cement against one side of the applying-roll above its cement-applying portion, and having a wiper which bears against the periphery of the applyingroll between the body of cement and the said applying portion, and a reservoir adapted to supply cement tothe presenter, said reservoir having an outlet extending into said body of cement, and being practically air-tight above said outlet, whereby the flow of cement to the presenter is automatically checked by the rise of cement in the latter.
