UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ADOLPH SCHRADR, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
SHELF-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 698,227, dated April 22, 1902. Application filed November 20, 1901. Serial No. 83,145. (No model.)
T0 caf/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ADOLPH SCHRADER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at San Diego,in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Shelf-Hooks and I do declare the vfollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shelf-hooks; and it consists in the provision of a hook which maybe easily and quickly applied to a shelf or removed therefrom, and consists of a single piece of wire which is bent upon itself to form the hook portion, as well as atongue designed to bear yieldingly against the under face of the shelf, while the ends of the Wire are bent in inverted- L shape and adapted to engage over the top of the shelf and held in place by means of the flexible tongue, which is prevented from moving laterally by the sections of the wire on either side.
The invention consists, further, in certain details of construction, which will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claimand illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the hook as applied to the edge of a shelf. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the hook.
Reference now being had to thel details of the drawings by letter, A designates a piece of wire which is bent at its middle portion, as at B, upon itself, forming a tongue C. This tongue is then bent at D at an inclination, forming a slightly-upturned hook E, which is supported and braced by the portions F,which at locations H I-I are bent at right angles to the normal position of the tongue. At points K the wire is bent again at ri'ghtangles, and the extreme ends are bent to form points T, which are adapted to engage in the upper surface of the shelf, table, or other article to which itis desired to apply the hooks. It will be observed that the tongue, which is flexible, is passed between the upright portions of the wire which are designed to be held adjacent to the edge of the shelf and is prevented from moving laterally thereby, while said tongue bears with sufficient pressure against the under surface of the shelf to cause the points at the end of 4the shelf-en gaging horizontal part or portion of the hook to bite into the shelf and hold the hook seters Patent, is-
A'shelf-hook made of a single piece of wire having its ends pointed. and turned downward and spaced apart, said wire'being bent at right angles at points T and designed to engage over the edge of a shelf, with the horizontal portions of the wire, intermediate the points T and the downwardlybent ends, adapted torest upon the rupper surface of a shelf, and thevertical portion of the wire to bear against'the edge of the shelf, said wire being bent upon itself at its longitudinal center, forming a flexible tongue C, the sections of the wire forming the tongue being in contact with each other, and having a vertical play between the portions of the wire which are designed to engage the edges of a shelf, the sections of the wire at tl'e base of the flexible tongue being bent at an inclination to form a hook, which is reinforced by bending the two sections of the wire upon themselves underneath the hook, the base of said tongue having a bearing against the portions of the wire underneath said hook at points H, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES ADOLPH SCHRADER.
