My invention is an improved vegetablepuller for uprooting vegetables such as beets, chicory, carrots, celery, parsnips, and the like the object of my invention being to provide an improved machine which is adapted to be drawn parallel with the rows of vegetables and to operate under and uproot the vegetables, so that they may be readily taken up.

My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vegetable-puller constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on a plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the shoe, Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the line Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention.

The beam 1 is similar to an ordinary plowbeam and may be constructed of Wood or metal. The rear portion of the beam is provided with avertical elongated slot2,in which is inserted the upper end of the combined colter and standard 3, which is bolted to the beam, as at 4. The said combined colter and standard is formed, preferably, of a plate of steel, is of considerable width and of slight thickness, the front edgethereof being the cutting edge for cutting through the soil and the sides of said combined colter and standard being vertical and plane.

The shoe 5 is horizontally disposed, is made of angle-steel, and is of suitable length and breadth. The side flange 6 of the shoe, on the inner side thereof, is bolted to the landside of the combined standard and colter 3, as at '7, the lower end of said combined colter and standard bearing on the said shoe and the latter having its ends projecting forward and rearward from the combined standard and colt-er, as shown;

The puller 8 is a metallic bar, preferably of steel, of suitable length and diameter, the ends of which'are bolted onthe shoe, as at 9. The said puller extends laterally from the inner side of the shoe, and its central portion is disposed at the height of several inches above the shoe, the said puller therebybeing disposed with its front portion 10 forming an ascending plane and its rear portion 11 forming a descending plane. I

The point 12 is of the shape shown and is disposed on the inclined front portion 10 of the puller and bolted thereto and also bolted on the front portion of the shoe, as shown. Said point has a depending flange 18, which bears against the inner side of the upturned flange 6 of the shoe and is bolted to said flange, and the upper portion of said point overlaps the combined standardand colter and bears against the same, as at 19, thus strengthening the connection between the combined standard and colter and the shoe. It will be understood that the said point and the said puller form a wedge, which in operation under a row of vegetables forces the vegetables upward and uproots them as the said wedge passes under them.

A wheel 13, which is carried by averticallyadjustable standard 14, secured to the beam bya clip-bolt l5, regulates the depth at which the puller operates in the soil under the rows of plants. The beam is provided with the 85 usual clevis 16 and handle 17.

When it is desired to use the implement to pull or uproot two rows of vegetables at a single operation, I provide a bracket 20,- which is bolted on one side of the beam and forms go a lateral extension thereof. The upper end of another standard Sis bolted to said bracket, said standard carrying a shoe, puller, and point, which are duplicates of those hereinbefore described. A draw-bar 21 is attached 5 to the clevis 16 and projects laterally therefrom. A ring 22 for the attachment of a doublctree is adjustably secured on ,the drawbar by a clip 23. The projecting end of the draw-bar is connected by a rod 24 to the bracket 20. This is shown in Fig. 6.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a vegetable-puller of the class described, the combination of a beam, a combined colter and standard, a horizontally-disposed shoe at the lower end of said combined colter and standard, a puller secured on the shoe at the ends thereof, said puller being disposed on one side of said combined coiter and standard, having its center portion raised and inclining downwardly toward its ends, and a point at the front ends of said shoe and puller, substantially as described.

2. In a vegetable-puller of the class described, the combination of a beam, a combined standard and colter secured thereto, a

horizontally-disposed shoe at the lower end of said combined colter and standard, said shoe extending in front and rear of said combined colter and standard, a puller secured to the ends of said shoe, said puller being disposed on one side of said combined eolter and standard, having its front portion forming an ascending plane, and its rear portion forming a descending plane, and a point secured on the ascending front portion of said puller and on the front portion of said shoe, substantially as described.
