(Application filed May 11, 1901.)

LYMAN S. BAKER, OF
CAMDEN, MICHIGAN.
HEATING-FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,791, dated April 1, 1902.
Application filed May 11, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN S. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, county of Hillsdale, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in HeatingFurnaces; andI declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to heating-furnaces, and has for its objectanimprovementin that class of furnaces used for domestic heating.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section from front to rear of the furnace. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section at the line b b of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section at the line a a, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section at the line of Fig. 1. r
The furnace consists of an external casing 1, square or rectangular in form. Within this are located the ash-pit, fire-pot, combustion-chamber, smoke-gathering fines, and airheating chamber of the furnace.
The ash-pit 2 is provided with a clear-out door 3, and on the ash-pit rests a fire-pot 4., formed in the shape of a reversed truncated pyramid. At the bottom of the fire-pot and I between the fire-pot and the ash-pit is a shakinggrate 5 of any approved construction. Above the ash-pit is a combustion-chamber 6, and this combustion-chamber is divided from the air-heating chamber, whichlies above it, by a diaphragm 7, through which there are holes for the smoke-collecting pipes 8, 9, 10, and 11 and a hole for the magazine-passage 12.
On the lower side of the diaphragm 7 are secured holding-strips 15 and 16, which engage with flanges 17 and 18, made at the top of a rectangular magazine-spout 13, and the spout 13 is removable from the combustionchamber and can be removed anda spout of difierent length put in its place, or it can be entirely removed to enable the furnace to be used as a wood-burner.
At the top of the first air-heating chamber It is a diaphragm 19, through which are pas- Serial No. 59,764. (No model.)
sages for the pipes 8, 9, 10, and 11 and through which the upper end of the fixed part of the magazine spout projects. A removable and adjustable part 20 of the magazinespout engages in the upperend of the fixed part 12, and a section extends out through the side walls of the furnace-jacket, where it is easily reached, and through it coal can be introduced into the magazine and into the fire, making the furnace a base-burning furnace, if desired.
In the upper heating-chamber 21 the pipes 8, 9, 10, and 11 converge to a smoke-dome 22, from which the smoke-exit pipe 23 leads to the chimney. Dampers 2 L and 25 are provided to close the smoke-pipe, and these are made in two sets, so that the smoke-exits may be partly closed or entirely closed or entirely open, as may be desired.
An air-flue 26 is made as an attachment to the door 27, and the air-flue 26 leads from the upper part of the door downward to a central point in the combustion-chamber just over the middle part of the fire-pot. Provision is thus made for the introduction of a secondary supply of air into the combustion-chamber and substantially into the middle of the space above the fuel.
The fire-pot and combustion-chamber are both rectangular, and the smoke-fines are located in the corners above the corner parts of the rectangular fire-pot, thereby tending to produce a directdraft through the corner parts of the fire-pot and'more perfect combustion.
What I claim is In a furnace for heating purposes, in combination with a rectangular fire-pot, a rectangular combustion-chamber thereabove, a heating-chamber above said combustion-chamber, and smoke-outlet pipes located above the corners of the fire-pot, extending, and converging to a common center, in said heatingchamber toward the top thereof.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two Witnesses.
LYMAN S. BAKER.
