NORMAN BLY, OF OROWNPOINT, NEW YORK.
CUTTER-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,794, dated April 1, 1902.
Application tiled September 20, 1901. SerialNo. 751692. (No model.)
To all whom t 11i/Cty concern,.-I
Be it known that I, NORMAN BLY, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Crownpoint, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cutter-Head, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wood worki ug-tools; and its object is to provide a new and improved cutter or matcher-head which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to permit convenient and quick adjustment of the knives for forming tongues and grooves or for dressing the sides of heavy material and to prevent breaking of the edges of the material in front of the knives, thusinsuring a clean cut and considerable saving of lumber.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinationsy of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line l l in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
On the spindle or mandretA of a woodworking-machine is fitted to slide vertically a sleeve-like carrier B, adapted to be adj usted in a vertical direction by a set-screw O and arranged to be securely fastened in place on the spindle after adjustment is made bya setscrew O. On the carrier B are removably held the cutter-blocks D D' and the circular saw E, located between the blocks D D and clamped with the same in position on the carrier B between an integral flange B and a nut B2, screwing on the threaded portion B3 of the said carrier. The cutter-blocks D D are alike in construction, and each is formed with radial guideways, in which are mounted to slide cutter-bars F, secured in place by bolts G and carrying segmental knives H,each cutter-bar F being provided with a peripheral guideway F', engaging a groove in the under side of the corresponding knife I-I, the said groove being also engaged by the head I of a bolt I, extending through the cutter-bar F, to securely fasten the knife I-l in place after the same has Vbeen segmentally adjusted on t the guideway F. Each cutter-block D and D' is also formed with another set of radial guifleways for the cutter-blocks F2 to slide in, and on the outer ends of the cutter-blocks F2 are adjustably secured straight knives J by means of bolts l2, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. rlhe cutter-bars F2 are secured iu place after the desired adjustment is made by clamping-bolts G, similar to the bolts G above referred to. Chip-breakers K are secured by bolts K to the sides of the cutter- `desired cut can be made to properly trim or dress the lumber to the size of the groove cut by the circular saw E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Acutter-head,comprisingcutter-blocks, knives on said cutter-blocks, chip-breakers carried by the cutter-blocks and having beveled outer ends to engage the bevels of the knives, a circular saw between the cutterblocks, and a carrier for attachment to a spindle or mandrel and removably supporting the said blocks and saw, the said carrier having means for clamping the blocks and saw together and holding the same in position on the carrier, as set forth.
2. A cutter-head having cutter-bars arranged in sets, segmental knives held adjustably on the outer ends of one set of cutterbars, straight knives held adjustably on the outer ends of the other set of cutter-bars, and a chip-breaker for each knife having a beveled edge to engage the bevel of the knife, as set forth. l
3. Acutter-head, comprisinga cutter-block having two sets of radial guideways, sets of IOO cutter-bars slidablysecured in the said guide- Ways each cutterbar having a guideway at its outer end, segmental knives adjustably secured on the guideways of one set of cutter-bars,straight knives secured on the guideways of the other set of cutter-bars, and chipbreakers secured to the cutter-bars and having their outer ends beveled, as set forth.
4. A cutter-head having a cutter-bar, a
1o knife held on said cutter-bar, and a chipbreaker adj ustably secured on the cutter-bar and having a beveled outer end to engage the bevel of the knife, as set forth.
5. A cutter-head, having a knife, and a chip-arrester and knife-setter engaging the bevel of the knife, as set forth.
G. Acntter-head, comprisingacutter-block having radial guideways, cutter-bars slidably secured in the said guideways, each cutterbar having a peripheral guideway at its outer end and a segmental knife adjnstabljY secured on the guideway of the said cutter-bar, and
' a chip-breaker adjustably secured on the side of the cutter-bar to engage the bevel of the corresponding knife, as set forth.
'7'.A A cutter-head, comprising a cutter-block having radial guideways, cutter-bars slidably secured in the said guideways, each cutterbar having a peripheral guidevvayv at its outer Y end and a segmental knife adjustably secured on the guideway of the said cutter-bar, and a chip-breaker adj ustably secured on the side of the cutter-bar to engage the bevel of the corresponding knife, the said chip-breaker having a beveled outer end for engaging the bevel of the knife, as set forth.
8. A cutter-head, comprising cutter-blocks, cutter-bars adjustable on the cutter-blocks and formed with guideways, segmental and straight knives arranged alternately on said guideways and fitted to slide thereon, means for securing the knives in place on the cutter-bars after adjustment, chip-breakers adjustably secured to the sides of the cutterbars and having their outer ends beveled to engage the bevels of the said knives, a saw between the cutter-blocks and a carrier for attachment to a revoluble spindle and removably supporting the said cutter-blocks and saw, as set forth. 4
In testimony `whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
NORMAN BLY.
