JUDSON BUCHANAN, OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR TO CHAT- TANOOGA PLOl/V 00., A CORPORATION OF TENNESSEE.
WH EEL- PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,906, dated March 25, 1902.
Application filed September 28, 1901. Serial No. 76,827. (No model.)
To ctZZ whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUDSON BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates particularly to wheelplows having a pair of wheels forward of the moldboard and a caster wheel or trailing wheel located rearwardly of the moldboard.
The object of my invention is to provide a more complete adjustment of the frame or beam to which the moldboard is attached, whereby the proper variations in inclination and elevation of the moldboard may be secured to compensate for wear of the moldboard. To secure such adjustment, provision must be made for independently raising or lowering the beam or frame with reference to each of the three wheels of the plow.
The moldboard may be of the ordinary fixed form or of the rotary or disk form. T0 attain the best results, both of said forms require adjustment in all of three directions first,in a vertical direction; second, for proper inclination with reference to a plane which is vertical and parallel to the length of the machine; third, for proper inclination with reference to the front and rear of the machine. If the adjustment is to be made in a vertical direction without changing the inclination, the frame or beam should be raised or lowered equally with reference to each of the three wheels. If the moldboard is to be made to incline toward the right, the left-hand wheel is raised or the right-hand wheel is lowered. If the moldboard is to be inclined toward the left, the right-hand wheel is raised or the lefthand wheel is lowered. If the moldboard is to be inclined backward, both front wheels are raised or the rear wheel low ered. If the moldboard is to be inclined forward, the rear wheel is raised or both the front wheels lowered. Obviously this inclination may be accomplished by the proper partial elevation and depression of the three wheels.
This general statement is made in order that my improvement, which relates only to the adjustment of the rear or caster wheel, may be more readily understood.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side perspective view of the plow embodyin g myimprovement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2 2 of Fig. 3lookingin the direction of the arrow." Fig. 3 is a plan of the portion of the plow involved in making the coupling between the caster-wheel and the plowbeam. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the bearing-block into which the'caster-arm is journaled.
A is the moldboard.
B is the right-hand front wheel.
0 is the left-hand front wheel.
D is the tongue or front beam.
E is the front axle.
F is the beam.
G is the caster-wheel or rear wheel.
H and I are rack-levers for adjusting the elevation of the front of the machine at either side.
As my improvement does not extend to the means for adjustment at the front of the ma chine, I deem it unnecessary to' describe in detail the mechanism used for this purpose.
J is the caster-wheel arm, which has at one end a lateral axle J, extending through the hub of the wheel G, and at the other end the vertical journal J extending through the caster-bearing block K. Said bearing-block has a tubular bearing K of proper depth and internal diameter to receive said journal J At its lower end said journal J 2 extends through said bearing and receives the transverse cotter-pinf. Said bearing-block is so applied to the beam F as to permit relative vertical adjustment between said members. Either of said members may be made with a broader vertical face than is needed for binding said members together in only one position. The drawings show said bearing-block made approximately twice as wide in a vertical direction as the lateral face of the beam F, and said block is provided with vertical transverse slots K and the beam is provided with corresponding circular holes F for the reception of bolts L, extending through said beam and block. By tightening said bolts said block and beam are immovably bound together. Heretofore said block has been made only approximately as wide in the vertical direction as said beam and provided with round apertures corresponding to similar apertures through the beam. This construction permitted the binding of said block and said beam together in only one position. With such construction the rear wheel could not be adjusted for varying the rearward'and forward inclination of the moldboard. The side of the beam F to which said block K is applied is preferably provided with longitudinal ribs F while the bearing-block is provided on the opposing face with corresponding ribs K the ribs I? being adapted to rest in the spaces between the ribs K A heavy washer L may be interposed between the beam and the end of the bolt L. The drawings show such bearing-block provided with a sufficient number of ribs to permit the application of said block and the beam F to each other in four different positions. They are shown applied to each other, with said block in the lowerposition. This places the rear end of the beam at the highest elevation and inclines the moldboard forward as far as this may be accomplished by the adjustment of the rear wheel. The said bearingblock has mounted upon its rear an oblique shoulder K against which the arm J rests when the caster-wheel Gstands in its rearmost position. Said wheel is free to swing upon the journal J toward the left. The seatstandard M is shown applied to the front of said bearing-block upon an oblique vertical face M. Said bearing-block is a single-piece casting.
I claim as my invention 1. In a Wheel-plow, the combination of a caster-wheel, a caster-wheel'arm having a vertical journal, bolts, two members, one a beam supporting the moldboard and the other a bearing-block for said journal and having a shoulder, K, the meeting faces of said members being vertical and provided with interlocking ribs, and one of said members being adapted to receive said bolts while said member is at any one of a plurality of elevations compared with the other of said members, substantially as described.
2. In a wheel-plow, the combination of a caster-wheel, a caster-wheel arm having a vertical journal, two members, one a beam supporting the moldboard and the other a bearing-block for said journal and having a shoulder, K one of said members having vertical slots to receive bolts, substantially as described.
3. In a wheel-plow, the combination of a caster-wheel, a caster-wheel arm having a vertical journal, bolts, two members, one a beam supporting the moldboard and the other a bearing-block for said journal, the meeting faces of said members being vertical and parallel to the length of said beam and provided with interlocking ribs, and one of said members being adapted to receive said bolts while said member is at any one of a plurality of elevations compared with the other of said members, substantially as described.
4. In a wheel-plow, the combination of a caster-wheel, a caster-wheel arm having a vertical journal, bolts, two members, one a beam supporting the moldboard and the other a bearing-block for said journal and having a shoulder, K the meeting faces of said members being vertical and parallel to the length of said beam and provided with interlocking ribs, and one of said members being adapted to receive said bolts while said member is at anyone of a plurality of elevations compared with the other of said members, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 26th day of September, in the year 1901.
