SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 695,175, dated March 11, 1902. Application filed November 29, 1901. Serial No. 83,933. (No model.)
T to whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY R. ROSE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fire-doors, and relates more particularly to that class that are automatically closed when a certain degree of temperature has been reached.
The present invention has for its object to automatically close the openings of wells, shafts, aerial ways, staircases, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to pro- .vide a novel form of door that will not obstruct the opening when not in use; further more, that may be easily folded together and one that will take up very little room when in its normal position.
The invention also contemplates providing a device of the abovedescribed character that will dispense with springs or other complicated mechanism that is liable to become out of order, but provide a device wherein the movements of the door will be positive and will effectually close an opening to check the draft and prevent the flames from spreading to other parts of the building.
The invention further aims to construct a fire-door that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to'manufacture.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved fire-doors, showing the same in an open position and showing in vertical section the opening in the floor that will be covered in case of fire. Fig.2 is a top plan view of the doors when in a closed position. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the forward portion of one of the doors, showing the roller in vertical section. Figxlis aperspective view of one of the guides, which is partly in section and shows the incline. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the bracket carrying the tripping-hook. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of a central track, which may be employed in connection with the improved doors in cases where the openings are of a large area.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the floor of the building having formed therein an opening 2.
The reference-numeral 3 represents suitable standards, oarrying on their upper ends brackets 4, in which are suitably mounted pulleys 5.
The reference-numeral 6 represents a section of the fire-door which is hinged at 7 to the floor, said fire-door being hinged at its other end, as shown at S, to the fire-door 9, the latter carrying on its lower end the outwardlyextending roller or wheel 10, this roller or wheel being adapted to travel upon the track 11, formed on the guide 12, having an inclined portion 14, the said guides 12 being suitably sec ured to the sides of the openings 2, formed in the floor, and extending to the center thereof, a small open space 15 being left between the ends of the guides.
The reference-numeral16 represents brack ets secured to the sides of the openings, said brackets having pivotally secured therein tripping-hooks 17, the lower ends of said trip ping-hooks 17 having secured. thereto a cable,
chain, or like connection 18, having inter-- posed therebetween the fusible links 19. The other end of the tripping-hooks 17 carries an engaging end 20 to receive a hook or eye 21, secured to the free end of the cable 22, passing upwardly against the outer face of the fire-door 9, over the same, and over the pulley 5, the end of said cable being provided with a counterbalance weight 23. In cases where large openings or wells are guarded it is essential to employ a central guideway 25, which is preferably secured to a T-iron 24, as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
The operation of my improved doors is as follows: When the temperature reaches 110 to 150 Fahrenheit, the fusible links will melt and the tripping-hooks 17 will be actuated by means of the counterbalance-weight 23,which will disengage the cable from the engaging end of the hooks, the weight dropping to the floor, thereby releasing the doors 9 from their support and allowing the roller or wheel to ride down the incline and travel upon the track 14 to the opening 15. By this operation the door 6, being hinged to the doors 9, Will also be operated in a like manner, both doors will reach a horizontal position, and the way will be closed, as will be readily understood.
It will be noted that by this construction IO the operation is entirely automatic and is accomplished by gravity, thereby assuring the operation at all times When the temperature reaches a predetermined degree.
The many other advantages obtained by I 5 the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of constrnction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of fire-doors hinged together, rollers or wheels carried by one of said firedoors, an inclined track, a tripping-hook secured below said doors, means attached to said tripping-hook to retain said doors in an upright position, and means to automatically release said tripping-hook, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of fire-doors secured on opposite sides of a Well, rollers or wheels carried by said doors, inclined tracks not meeting in the center, tripping-hooks secured at opposite sides of said well below said doors, and means carried by said hooks to retain said doors in an upright position, substantially as set forth.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of fire-doors hinged on opposite sides of a well, rollers or wheels carried by said doors, oppositely-inclined tracks, tripping means secured to the sides of the well, means attached to said tripping means to retain the doors in an upright position, and a fusible connection interposed between said tripping means below said doors, whereby said tripping means and doors are automatically and simultaneously released, substantially as described.
